New Balance’s Legendary USA-Made 1300JP Emerges from Its 5-Year Hibernation

Some things in life are worth the wait: the Olympics, Nintendo’s next entertainment console, a new season of Severance. Oh yeah, and the New Balance 1300JP.

New Balance’s legendary Made in USA sneaker emerges once again from its five-year slumber. While the contemporary sneaker market heavily revolves around weekly releases, the Boston-based brand’s masterpiece has maintained a deliberate release schedule since 1995. In fact, the last time it was here was back in 2020!

Now in its 40th anniversary year, the iconic Steel Blue runner returns virtually unchanged, not because New Balance lacks innovation but because they recognize the perfect formula requires no tinkering.

CULT STATUS

Some sneakers are hyped, but the 1300JP might actually be worshipped.

Long before they became a streetwear icon, New Balance launched the Made in USA 1300 as a premium runner in 1985. The model then found its most devoted disciples in Japan, inspiring the company to debut the 1300JP ten years later. This Japan-exclusive variant was the silhouette that ignited the quinquennial release schedule it’s now become famous (or perhaps infamous) for.

Putting a Price on a Classic

While its original $130 price tag would be considered expected in today’s sneaker landscape, this was considered astronomical in the ’80s (I remember in the late ’90s, my mom being appalled that the new Gary Payton “The Glove” Nikes I wanted were $85, but I digress). However, considering New Balance’s made-in-the-USA manufacturing and luxe materials, this hike was justified.

Original ads simply stated “Mortgage the house,” calling to attention the premium price. But since then, the silhouette has only climbed higher. The 2025 rendition of the cult classic debuts at an eyebrow-raising $330! But whether $130 or $330, these sneakers will be sure to go quickly.

AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

While other brands merely boast an ostensible American heritage while manufacturing overseas, the 1300JP’s “Made in USA” badge actually means something. At least 70% of its value is created on American soil, crafted in New England by a team of 36 artisans. In an era where “premium” often means just a higher price tag, the 1300JP delivers substance as well.

Only the Hits

While competitors continue to cram more air, foam, and traction into their latest drops, the 1300JP confidently sticks to what works. Not only does the iconic Steel Blue/Mirage Gray colorway return untouched, but the materials have stuck around too. Premium nubuck overlays and breathable mesh foundations create a perfect harmony of texture, while the legendary ENCAP midsole continues to prove its timelessness.

For the uninitiated, the ENCAP was revolutionary in ’85 for combining a cushioned foam core with a polyurethane rim. Today, it still holds up in terms of comfort.

Finished with handsome white leather lining and vintage-inspired packaging, these shoes are a masterclass in restraint when most of the industry can’t stop shouting for attention.
