Los Angeles-based luxury brand Jacques Marie Mage began in 2014 and has already made a name for itself in that short time. Specializing in sunglasses handmade in Japan, we’ve already seen notable collaborations from the label with celebrities like Dennis Hopper and Jeff Goldblum, just to name a few. Much of the inspiration for these releases comes from the Old West and Americana in general. This era has influenced many creatives over the years, and its influence on one particular man, Johnny Cash, is invariably found in his iconic music, style, and legacy. So Jacques Marie Mage’s Johnny Cash Collection that just dropped makes perfect sense, featuring two pairs of sunglasses, the Cash and the Quentin, inspired by the man in black himself and some of his classic (and illegal) moments in history.
Kicking things off, we have the Cash sunglasses that are inspired by the iconic picture taken during Johnny’s 1965 arrest in El Paso, Texas, where he was apprehended for the possession of drugs (668 amphetamines and 475 barbituates, to be exact) on his way back from Juarez. These retro shades have an oversized rectangular frame made with cured cellulose acetate, high temples made with custom double-laminated acetate, dark gold arrowhead front pins, and sepia CR39 lenses.
The Quentin sunglasses are inspired by an inmate’s eyewear seen in a picture taken during Johnny Cash’s historic 1969 performance at San Quentin Penitentiary. They’re a bit less bulky than the Cash glasses but feature the same building material, along with silver hatchet front pins, paddle temples, and sweet brown CR39 lenses. Both sunglasses have a Johnny Cash signature foil marking on the inner temple of the frame and lenses with an anti-reflective treatment.
