The 146-year-old shoemaker’s Weejuns pioneered the penny loafer over 85 years ago (86 to be exact), and it’s taking the sustainable route by crafting a new pair using cactus leather.
The brand’s Weejuns silhouette retains every bit of its original design, but the major twist is its composition. By using its new cruelty-free, organic textile, DESSERTO CACTUS LEATHER, the brand has managed to reimagine a quintessential look to keep things eco-friendly. This water-resistant vegan material is made with nopal cactus leaves and is garnering its first reveal in shades of black, red, and, most fittingly, green.
Additionally, the shoe’s footbed is composed of the same mindful material, although it features a traditional leather heel sock with signature gold foil branding. As far as wearability is concerned, the loafer’s mini storm welt is bound to lend a hand against unpredictable rainfall, while its lightweight EVA midsole and outsole are sure to make walking in these an absolute breeze. All in all, you don’t stick around the shoe game for over 100 years if your product isn’t comfortable, and we expect this iteration to be as timeless as the innovative original.
