Salomon’s transition from being an outdoor brand to revered streetwear staple is one of legend. Over the past decade or so, the French firm has gone from ski equipment and mountain shoes to perennial urban favorite, and without losing its rugged edge.
Among the many collaborations they’ve partook in, Salomon’s upcoming tandem with Carhartt WIP signals that they’ve remained committed to that balance between stylish and rugged. One could say Carhartt WIP was one of the originators of the outdoor brand-turned-style icons when the heritage brand launched the collection back in 1994. Now, taking Salomon’s X-ALP, the Michigan-based workwear brand has brought the signature WIP touch to the technical approach sneaker, and it looks destined for the trail perhaps more than any Salomon we’ve seen.

Built for the Trail
This isn’t the first time these two have linked up. In 2022, they came together for the Shelter CSWP hiking boot, proving that marrying Carhartt’s workwear DNA with Salomon’s alpine expertise was a natural fit. But the latest collab takes it to a new level.
For the X-ALP, Salomon borrowed from their mountaineering heritage with the standard X-ALP silhouette, originally designed for ski touring and alpine pursuits, and known for balancing weight with durability exceptionally well. Like the standard version, the mixed-media upper combines leather panels at the eyestay, synthetic overlays, and a protective rubber mudguard that wraps the toe — still with the lateral power band and 3D Edging Chassis that make these so durable to begin with.
Outdoor Stealth
Color-wise, the sneakers are mostly black, with a bespeckled pattern on the mudgard. Carhartt’s influence comes through in certain details as well. Bringing some color to the ensemble, patches of their iconic duck camo appear across the collar and tongue, a direct nod to the workwear lineage that’s made them icons for over a century. The nearly monochromatic black treatment keeps things understated, with collaborative branding relegated to rear pull tabs and insoles.
