It’s obvious we’re living in a max-stack era of running shoes. Across the board, brands like Hoka with its 48mm Skyward X2, Asics with its 45mm Superblast 3, and even Nike with its 55mm Vomero Premium have made these high-cushioned runners a sort of standard in the space.
While Adidas has played in this arena too with its own Adizero Prime X and Adios Pro 4 (both around 50mm), the athletic icon, along with the rest of the aforementioned sneakers, have yet to appeal this kind of stack height to daily runners. That all changes with their new Hyperboost Edge.

A CENTURY IN THE MAKING
There’s no brand with more running credibility in its lineage than Adidas. When Adi Dassler was hand-stitching spiked shoes in his mother’s kitchen back in 1924, he wasn’t thinking about Boost foam or PEBA pellets. He was thinking about performance. That obsession paid off when Jesse Owens wore Dassler’s canvas-and-rubber track shoes to win four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Fast forward to 2013, and Adidas redefined the running shoe again with the debut of Boost foam in the Energy Boost, which then exploded into lifestyle and racing status with the 2015 Ultraboost. The brand has been chasing that energy ever since, refining its racing midsoles through the Adizero line with each passing year. The Hyperboost Edge is the next evolution of that story, just aimed at a wider, more daily-run-focused audience.

THE NEW FOAM YOU NEED TO KNOW
At the center of this shoe is Hyperboost Pro, a PEBA-based foam that’s the brand’s first serious attempt to bring elite racing midsole tech down to a daily trainer without a carbon plate. With a 45mm rearfoot stack and a 6mm drop, the geometry here is what you’d expect from a plush, energetic ride, but the absence of any stiffening plate or dual-foam stack keeps things natural through the gait cycle. Adidas put it through lab testing alongside research conducted by the University of Cologne, where 73% of runners preferred its energy return over their current footwear.
The late-stage rocker geometry is worth calling out too, as it actively assists toe-off, which is something you don’t always get at this price point without a plate doing the heavy lifting. At around 9oz for a men’s US 8.5, the Hyperboost Edge sits in competitive territory, lighter than the Hoka Skyward X2 and not far off the Asics Megablast despite a comparable stack.

BUILT LIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM
Adidas clearly didn’t want the upper or outsole to undermine what the midsole is doing. The PRIMEWEAVE upper is a soft, hyper-light woven build that locks your foot into place, with integrated heel pods supplying stability where the foot actually needs it. The TPU-bonded construction is notably different than the pilled-knit uppers we’ve seen on some competitors. Visually, the hidden eyelets and clean lines help give the shoe a stylish aesthetic, if that’s what you’re going for.
Down below, the full-length LIGHTTRAXION outsole is only 2mm thick, which is aggressively thin for a shoe sitting on this much foam. The GCPU-based rubber covers heel to toe and should hold up on both wet and dry pavement. The one caveat: Adidas has been known to run circles around competitors with Continental rubber (which is still on some of its top-end models), and without it here, these might not be quite as durable.

THE DESIGN ANGLE
One detail that sneaker people will immediately clock: the Three Stripes have been moved to the midsole. It’s a first for Adidas running footwear, but we’re into it. Rather than the usual midfoot branding, the stripes run along the stacked foam, framing the shoe’s most important design element. The launch colorway is red and white. Additional colorways arrive May 1 for those who prefer something a bit lower-key.
