It’s quite impressive how much the modern Radiomir watches from Panerai retain the spirit of the original Ref.3646 from 1940. This week at Watches & Wonders in Geneva, the Italian-born Swiss brand is unveiling a handful of models that pays tribute to the line’s vintage history.
Radiomir Otto Giorni
For much of its early history, Panerai made military instruments such as rifle scopes and diving gauges. However, in 1935, it was asked by the Italian Royal Navy to make wristwatches. This new Radiomir Otto Giorni is an ode to the original prototype, sporting an aged look with hand-finished eSteel cases and grainy dials (in brown or blue) to look like they’ve been anodized. Other homages include the larger branding up top, the slim wire lugs, the sandwich dial, and even the slightly domed sapphire crystal, which harkens back to the Plexiglass original.
Radiomir California 45mm
California dials have been tied to Panerai almost since the style first started cropping up. An early proponent of the half-Arabic/half-Roman numeral style, Rolex assisted the new watchmaker on its 47mm Radiomir watches in the 1930s. Some of these references featured the California dial, which now graces the front of this new 45mm timepiece — the first Radiomir California dial in this case size. Other vintage features are the eSteel case finishing, the green dial, and the minute track around the outside.
Radiomir Quaranta Goldtech
Panerai’s proprietary Goldtech material gets its reddish color from its inclusion of platinum and copper. It is now used on the 40mm version of the Radiomir Quaranta, an elegant timepiece with a radiant finish. The dressiest of the latest Watches & Wonders reveals, this piece has cutout indices with lume underneath and a white sandwich dial that features a date window and seconds subdial.
Radiomir Calendario Annuale
Highlighting the new Radiomirs is a pair of watches that feature the brand’s first-ever annual calendar complication. Available in Goldtech and Platinumtech alloy cases — with blue and maroon dials, respectively — the Calendario Annuale is powered by the calibre P.9010/AC automatic movement and features a day-and-date window while the outside track is a rotating wheel that reads the current month. These elegant watches come in either black or blue alligator leather straps.
