In late 2020, Travis Pastrana was granted permission to do a takeover of the HOONIGAN Gymkhana video series, in which the SX and MX icon was handed the keys to an 862-hp Subaru STI to unleash upon his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. And after the success of Pastrana’s initial drift video, the 38-year-old wheelman has announced that he will be participating in another Gymkhana video, this time hooning a custom, specially-prepped, one-of-one widebody Subaru GL Wagon.
While thus far, details on the newest Gymkhana car are scant, some basic info has been revealed. We know the custom is based on a 1983 specimen that’s been treated to an ultra-boxy set of custom widebody-style bodywork with massive fender flares and a full aero kit that’s crafted entirely from lightweight carbon fiber. Underneath the carbon bodywork lies an unspecified powertrain that’s reportedly good for around 900hp. Playfully capped off with a roof rack, the Subaru rides on a set of eight-arm rally-spec wheels shod in Yokohama rubber.
Having already previously set records behind the wheel of other specially-prepped Subarus, Pastrana hopes that the short wheelbase and boxy nature of the one-off wagon will allow him to more easily learn the corners of the car, while also helping to improve his proximity driving and his technique on reverse entry corners — two of Pastrana’s weak points, according to friend and collaborator Ken Block. Pastrana’s GL Wagon was also penned with help from world-renowned concept artist Khyzyl “The Kyza” Saleem, who also previously helped design Ken Block’s iconic 1977 Ford F-150-based “HOONITRUCK.”
With the car now revealed, we anticipate Travis Pastrana’s next Gymkhana video to premier over the coming months — at which time we also expect to be treated to a full spec-sheet on the build that the Maryland native and Nitro Circus star will be piloting.
