Rivian’s Spinoff ALSO Just Reinvented the E-Bike With Its Modular Pedal-by-Wire TM-B

Between a cooling EV market and strong competition across the globe, Rivian has had a tough past couple of years, to say the least. But as it continues to pull itself back to the forefront of the electric revolution, its spinoff brand ALSO remains a silver lining.

Surging in popularity over the past 5 years, e-bikes are clearly here to stay. And while still a relatively new category, ALSO is showing us how there’s still lots of room for innovation and freshness with its inaugural consumer product, the TM-B.

A Different Kind of Two-Wheeler

The TM-B (Transcendent Mobility Bike) isn’t your typical e-bike. This thing was built from the ground up around its proprietary DreamRide drivetrain — a pedal-by-wire system that completely eliminates the mechanical connection between your legs and the rear wheel. When you pedal, you’re actually powering a generator that feeds the battery while a separate traction motor drives the rear wheel via a Gates Carbon belt.

It’s a bold engineering choice that shows ALSO isn’t keen on just iterating existing designs. The chunky, weatherproof block housing the battery and computer at the bike’s base gives it an unmistakably futuristic appearance that doesn’t look like with anything else out there.

Modular Yet Practical

Where the TM-B really shines is its adaptability. The modular seat system lets you transform the bike without tools — swapping between a standard commuter setup, a utility configuration with cargo racks, or a moto-style bench seat depending on your needs.

The 5-inch circular touchscreen cockpit replaces the typical smartphone mount approach most e-bikes tend to have. With its rotatable bezel and integrated navigation, it’s clearly inspired by automotive interfaces rather than bicycle computers. Add in the regenerative braking with ABS, automatic security systems, and 120mm of front suspension travel, and you’ve got something that’s more like a compact electric vehicle than a traditional bike.

The Power Behind the Pedals

In terms of performance specs, you get 134lb.ft of torque, Class 3 speeds hitting 28mph with pedal assist, and range extending up to 100 miles depending on battery configuration. The removable battery packs (available in 538Wh or 808Wh variants) charge via USB-C and double as portable power banks.

The regenerative braking system can reportedly extend range by 25%, while the pedal-by-wire system offers 10 levels of assistance with both automatic and manual modes. For newcomers, that level of customization should help lessen the learning curve.

Rivian DNA Intact

You can trace ALSO’s automotive heritage throughout the TM-B’s design philosophy. The emphasis on vertical integration, proprietary drivetrains, and software-driven experiences mirrors Rivian’s approach to electric trucks. Even the partnership with Rivian dealerships for service and repair gives you something that most other e-bikes don’t by helping you find qualified technicians when something breaks.

The accompanying Alpha Wave helmet continues this automotive thinking, featuring Release Layer System (RLS) technology for rotational impact protection, integrated audio with four speakers and noise-canceling mics, plus seamless integration with the bike’s cockpit.
