Co-designed by Marcello Gandini and Maserati’s in-house Styling department, the Maserati Biturbo-Shamal was a high-end, high-performance grand tourer produced from 1990 to through 1995 — during which time only 369 units were ever built. And while it’s been nearly three-decades since the last unit rolled off the assembly line, boutique Italian marque and startup Modena Automobili has opted to revisit the forced induction GT car, giving it the modern-day restomod treatment, resulting in the Project MA-01 Maserati Biturbo-Shamal Restomod.

The Basics

Modena Automobili’s Project MA-01 takes Maserati’s Biturbo-Shamal and treats it to a major visual update while still retaining the donor’s core visual DNA. Underneath the surface, the vehicle has been completely overhauled from the frame up, receiving a host of contemporary hardware and components.

Under The Hood

In place of the original Maserati Biturbo Shamal’s 326-hp 3.2-liter V8, the Project MA-01 Restomod has been bestowed with the modern Maserati Ghibli S’ twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, which has been custom-tuned to make substantially more power. Bolted to the engine is the Ghibli S’ eight-speed ZF unit which has been specially calibrated to allow for gearshifts in just 150 milliseconds.

Power & Performance

Thanks to some special massaging and a few new internals, the Project MA-01’s twin-turbo V6 now cranks out 500hp. This ultimately allows the restomod to clock 0-60mph runs in 4.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 177mph.

The Bodywork

Draped over a chassis that’s been stripped, coated, and strengthened, the Project MA-01 Restomod features a custom suite of bodywork that puts a contemporary twist on Gandini’s original design. Brought to life in an amalgamation of steel and lightweight carbon fiber, the new body features a lowered grille, updated LED lighting all-around, bigger air intakes, a new front splitter, side skirts, and a truncated, Porsche 959-esque rear end with an integrated spoiler. The body has also received an exposed carbon central pillar that also acts as a roll-bar.
