Initially developed as a post-War agricultural utility vehicle, the Mercedes Unimog has come to be a legend among off-road and expedition enthusiasts. Shortly after its inception in the ’40s, customers were trying to find ways to customize the Unimog for recreational off-roading — essentially turning these do-anything vehicles into RVs.
About 15 years ago, these transformations turned from niche hobby to commercialization as custom brands started to sell their own. It didn’t take long before Mercedes themselves decided to get in on the action, officially partnering with Hellgeth to make their own Unimog-based campers like the TenereX. It’s been a couple of years since the TenereX debuted and we’re still quite smitten with just how these two firms perfected the off-roading RV.

Built for the Wilderness
The name “TenereX” comes from the Tuareg word Ténéré, meaning “the wilderness out there,” which tells you everything about where this rig is meant to go. Based on the Unimog U 4023 chassis, Hellgeth equipped it with selectable all-wheel drive, longitudinal and differential locks on both axles, and a tire pressure control system you can adjust on the fly. Ground clearance is substantial, with fording capability reaching 3.9ft of water.
The portal axles and torsionally flexible frame allow this thing to twist and articulate over challenging terrain. Long-travel coil spring suspension absorbs the harsh impacts before they reach the cab, keeping the ride comfortable even when you’re crawling over boulders.

Home Away from Civilization
Inside, Hellgeth’s living module uses fiber-reinforced plastics and aluminum to keep the permissible gross weight under 7.5 tons, meaning you can drive it with a standard Class 3 license in most markets. The interior packs a double bed, a proper kitchen with an induction cooktop and 85-liter compressor fridge, plus a separate wet bath with shower and composting toilet.

Fresh and grey water tanks, solar panels, and optional generator setups provide days of off-grid autonomy. The German-built body mounts via a three-point system to the chassis, allowing the frame to flex independently while keeping the living space stable. Not only can the TenereX do just about anything when overlanding, but you’ll often forget you’re sitting inside one of the most capable expedition vehicles on the planet.
