Ferrari’s SP48 Unica Is a Spectacular One-Off Based on the F8 Tributo

Last year, Ferrari took to Instagram to tease an upcoming one-off supercar that it was calling the SP48 Unica. Today, the Italian auto giant has unveiled a ton more information on the vehicle, which has been made specifically for one unnamed client.

Equipped with the very same rear-mid-mounted twin-turbo V8 engine as the company’s F8 Tributo, which launched a few years back, the SP48 Unica uses its progenitor as reference, with a few changes. Sporting a beautiful red-orange-finished body, the Unica is more aerodynamic thanks to the longer rear overhang that reduces suction and boosts rear downforce. The cabin itself also keeps most of the Tributo’s features, with the addition of certain cosmetics to match the Unica’s exterior motif, such as some hexagonal features and black Alcantara on the seats and cabin trim, lined with the same red-orange hue found on the exterior.

Under the direction of Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Styling Centre, the Berlinetta coupe’s aggressive design is in part thanks to the extensive use of procedural-parametric modeling techniques and 3D prototyping, allowing the deep front grille to have a continuous aesthetic, as though it’s been cut from a single piece of material. These techniques were also used to redesign the engine’s air intakes on the front bumper and underneath the rear spoiler. This plus-up, which isn’t a feature on the Tributo, better allows for cooling flows for the 710-HP engine.

The SP48 is part of Ferrari’s Special Projects program, which designs and builds one-off vehicles according to customers’ requests. For this model specifically, the customer in question was involved every step of the way to ensure that he or she was able to transmogrify the F8 Tributo platform to still retain Ferrari’s design ethos and dedication to quality.
