Nobody needs a car that can go over 200 miles-per-hour. By that same measure, nobody needs a delicious slice of pizza, a pair of hi-fi headphones, or an iconic wristwatch. But that doesn’t mean that some of us don’t want those things. Thankfully, we live in a world where we can get them if we want and can afford them. And yes, that includes super-fast automobiles.
As it turns out, you don’t even have to be a race car driver in order to get a ride that can send your eyeballs into the back of your skull. You don’t even have to be absurdly rich or have access to a race track. All you have to do is find and buy one of these 16 best street-legal cars that are capable of over 200mph. From hypercars to muscle cars, luxury grand tourers to all-electric street rockets, ultra-expensive autos to budget ballistic missiles, you can literally drive each and every one of these off the lot.
Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye
When it comes to pony cars, the Dodge Challenger is one of the greatest ever to hit the pavement. And while it doesn’t have the distinction of creating the category — that belongs to the Ford Mustang — we’re confident in our belief that its modern interpretation is the best of the current bunch. That goes double when you consider the monstrous SRT Hellcat Redeye. This street-legal beast has an absolutely gargantuan supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 engine available that’s good for up to 797 horsepower and 707 foot-pounds of torque. That powerplant enables this broad-shouldered ICBM to hit up to 203mph. She may not have the finesse of some of these other rides, but you’re not paying a premium price for her, either.
Top Speed: 203mph
Horsepower: 797
Torque: 707
Cadillac CTS-V
Easily the biggest sleeper on our list, Cadillac’s CTS-V has no business being as quick as it is. While it looks like a relatively high-end luxury sedan, this sporty four-wheeler has a beast waiting to be unleashed just below the hood. We’re talking, of course, about its 6.2L V8 engine — which is based on the LS6 found in the Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1. That monstrous beating heart gives this unassuming sport sedan an output of 640 horsepower, 630 foot-pounds of torque, and a top speed of 200mph. Probably the only downside to this particular ride is that it has a price tag that speaks more to the performance figures than the less-than-breathtaking styling. Still, if you want to feel like the underdog with an ace up your sleeve, this is definitely the vehicle for you.
Top Speed: 200mph
Horsepower: 640

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
If you want hypercar levels of performance, but you’re not lucky enough to have deep enough pockets, all is not lost. You can always turn to Chevrolet and their magnificent ZR1 to split the difference. At a fraction of the cost of, say, a Mclaren Senna, you can actually get better performance figures out of this legendary Chevy. Granted, it doesn’t have the same British pedigree, but we’re not entirely convinced that’s a bad thing. You see, the Corvette ZR1 is an American automobile through and through — which is one of the big reasons we love it so much. It’s also worth pointing out that the latest version of the ZR1 is the most powerful ever built — with up to 755 horsepower and 715 foot-pounds of torque. That also works out to a top speed of 212mph, which just barely eeks out the McLaren Senna, as mentioned, for nearly $900,000 less.
Top Speed: 212mph
Horsepower: 755
Torque: 715
Jaguar F-Type SVR
Jaguar is perhaps best known for delicately balancing class and performance, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to push a vehicle to its limits, as evidenced by the F-Type SVR coupe you see before you. This monster of a sports coupe comes courtesy of the brand’s in-house tuners at SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) and hinges upon an upgraded, supercharged 5.0L V8 engine that’s good for a total of 575 horsepower and a top speed of 200mph on the dot. That also means this ride does 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds and has plenty of off-the-line torque, courtesy of an all-wheel-drive system. And, as if that’s not enough, it also has a fully-featured interior with modern tech, quilted leather performance seats, a lean titanium exhaust system, an active carbon fiber rear spoiler, and so much more.
Top Speed: 200mph
Horsepower: 575
Torque: 516
Audi R8
Although it’s only been around since 2006, the Audi R8 will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest cars of all time. It’s sleek and surprisingly minimalist styling is iconic, but doesn’t betray the beast of a beating heart inside that gives it up to 611 horsepower and 617 foot-pounds of torque — figures that, together, give it a top speed of 205mph. Interestingly, this car is actually built upon a Lamborghini platform; first the Gallardo and then the Huracan. However, the similarities between this and the Raging Bull cars pretty much stop there, as the R8 utilizes Audi’s aluminum monocoque space frame atop the chassis. Truly a masterpiece of engineering, each R8 is built by hand out of over 5,000 individual parts, before being inspected by 95 lasers — ensuring tolerances within 0.1mm of the blueprints. It’s not as flashy as some of its brethren, but this supercar has it where it counts.

Porsche 911 Turbo S
If the Senna doesn’t hold the crown for the ultimate driver’s car, then the distinction probably belongs to the Porsche 911 — especially if you consider the 205mph Turbo S trim. Unmistakeable in its styling, this German sports car is exceptional in just about every single way, both inside and out. Fully upgraded with the Sport Chrono Package, it has a 0-60 time of just 2.8 seconds — fast enough to give you whiplash, even if you’re the one pushing down on the pedals — thanks to its twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder boxer engine. That powerplant is also good for a total of 580 horsepower and 516 ft-lbs of torque. Beautiful and iconic in its styling and aggressive in its performance, this street-legal legend definitely belongs amongst the greatest automobiles of all time.
Top Speed: 205mph
Horsepower: 580

Lamborghini Aventador S
While it’s safe to say that all of Lamborghini’s cars are fast, you might be surprised to find that they actually have few that inch over that 200mph top speed echelon. The Raging Bull brand is not without its own street rocket, however, in the Aventador S — which has a top speed of an impressive 217mph. This version of the automakers most iconic vehicle features a monstrous V12 engine that can pump out an equally-monstrous 740 horsepower. But since speed isn’t everything, it also comes loaded with plenty of other bonuses — like Lamborghini Active Vehicle Dynamics, four-wheel-steering, 130% better downforce than previous iterations, and more.
Top Speed: 217
Horsepower: 740
Torque: 507
Ford GT
When a brand comes forward and says that a particular model in their lineup is the culmination of everything great they do, you should probably pay attention. That goes double when it’s a game-changing, history-making car manufacturer like Ford. Responsible for some of the biggest leaps in the automotive world over the years, Ford has pulled out all the stops in the creation of their GT — and their dedication to its excellence is abundantly clear. Boasting a body whose shape is the result of extensive wind tunnel testing, a 3.6L EcoBoost V6 engine that manages to pump out 647 horsepower, and carbon fiber body panels atop aluminum structures, this is a marvel of modern engineering in every sense of the term. Perfect for people who love American ingenuity, but prefer less bullish aesthetics than most USA-made vehicles, the Ford GT is in a class of its own.
Top Speed: 216mph
Horsepower: 647
Torque: 550
McLaren Senna
The Senna is to McLaren what the GT is to Ford: a culmination of everything they’ve achieved in physical form. Named after the late, great Ayrton Senna — the legendary Brazilian racing driver — the intention of this vehicle, in the manufacturer’s own words, is to create “the purest connection between car and driver.” And we think they’ve managed exactly that, courtesy of F1-inspired styling, a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 659bhp, the ability to create 1764-pounds of downforce, active aerodynamics — the list just keeps going on and on. There are a lot of contenders out there for the greatest driver’s car, but the Senna might just be it.

Hennessey Venom F5
If there’s any street-legal car on this list that leaves us picking our jaws up off the floor, it’s Hennessey’s Venom F5. Proclaimed “America’s Hypercar” by the brand themselves, this car was built from the ground up to be the absolute fastest road car on the planet. And that goal was achieved thanks to a combination of a 1,600bph twin turbo V8 engine, advanced aerodynamics focused on the lowest possible drag, and an ultralight carbon fiber body. All told the Venom F5 is said to have a top speed of 301mph, but we don’t know a soul on Earth brave enough to push this street rocket to its limits, so we’ll take Hennessey’s word for it. Built in conjunction with Shell and Pennzoil, this spectacular hypercar is truly the embodiment of American ingenuity.
Top Speed: 301mph

Koenigsegg Jesko
Koenigsegg deserves a good deal of recognition in the car world, as they almost single-handedly created the hypercar category. On top of that, all their high-performance offerings have been, simply put, stunning works of automotive art. But their newest endeavor, the Jesko, is perhaps their most impressive and important to date. Not only is this magnificent monstrosity capable of speeds up to a whopping 300mph, but it’s also the first vehicle to receive a groundbreaking 9-speed transmission system that the brand has dubbed the LST (Light Speed Transmission). Top that all off with fighter jet styling, the fact that it is named after Christian von Koenigsegg’s father, a monocoque carbon fiber chassis, and up to 1,600 horsepower and it makes perfect sense that this $2.8M hypercar sold out before it was even put into production.
Top Speed: 300mph
Horsepower: 1,280-1,600

Bugatti Chiron
No list of ultra-fast vehicles is complete without an appearance from Bugatti — the legendary carmaker responsible for some of the most insane, over-the-top hypercars ever built. While their upcoming Divo is their next big release, we still have plenty of love for the Chiron — and not just because it’s more than $3m cheaper. You see, while the Divo has a number of updates, they don’t (in our opinion) make up that massive price hike. In fact, they both feature the same 8.0-liter W16 engine under the hood, which is good for 1,500 horsepower regardless of which car you’re driving. Plus, thanks to electronic limitations, both cars have comparable top speeds. Really, the only thing the Divo gives you that the Chiron doesn’t is perhaps more aggressive styling and more exclusivity — not that a $3.2m hypercar isn’t exclusive.
Top Speed: 261mph
Horsepower: 1,500
Torque: 1,180
Aston Martin Valkyrie
While all of the cars on this list can do at least 200mph, most top out just over that mark. Aston Martin’s magnificent Valkyrie, however, hits the halfway point from there to 300, topping out at a whopping 250mph. The godly hypercar manages this thanks to an impressive hybrid powertrain — comprised of a naturally-aspirated Cosworth 6.5L V12 engine and a Rimac-built KERS battery system — that’s good for 1,160 horsepower. Of course, it wouldn’t be a hypercar solely with speed, so you’ll also find loads of creature comforts and modern tech built into the luxurious interior. In fact, to ensure the perfect fit, the owner’s body gets 3D scanned before the car is built to ensure the driver’s seat fits like a glove. We’d expect no less from James Bond’s favorite auto manufacturer and the folks at Red Bull Racing.

Bentley Flying Spur
Newly announced for 2020, Bentley’s magnificent Flying Spur has gotten some pretty killer upgrades that elevate the grand tourer to even greater heights. For the third generation, an enhanced version of Bentley’s fabled 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine has been dropped into this luxury mini-limousine that gives it a horsepower rating of 626, 664 foot-pounds of torque, and a 207mph top speed. It also happens to be Bentley’s first ever vehicle to come equipped with an all-wheel steering system, which pairs perfectly with its all-wheel-drive and Dynamic Ride tech. Of course, it wouldn’t really be a Bently without some extreme luxury — which it has in spades throughout the interior. Set to hit dealerships toward the end of this year, the British auto manufacturer has certainly hit a home run.

Ferrari SF90 Stradale
A number of years ago, Ferrari’s president laughed at the idea that the Prancing Pony brand would ever pursue electric power trains. Since that time, however, the world has changed quite a bit and all-electric vehicles look to be the automobiles of the future. While Ferrari has yet to unveil a vehicle that’s entirely renewable, their latest release — the SF90 Stradale — is a huge jump in the right direction. This magnificent and beautiful car hinges on a plug-in hybrid system built around a gas V8 engine — giving it a combined horsepower rating in the 986 neighborhood, 590 foot-pounds of torque, and a top speed of 211mph. In case you’re keeping track, that makes this vehicle the most powerful Ferrari ever made. And it’s completely street-legal. If this is the direction the Italian brand is headed, we’re more than onboard.
Top Speed: 211mph
Horsepower: 986

Tesla Roadster
Two things make the Tesla Roadster an especially exceptional addition to our list. First, it’s the only all-electric vehicle you’ll find. Secondly, it has a monstrous top speed of over 250mph — making it one of the quickest rides here, bar none. Elon Musk’s brand also claims that this car, when it finally hits the road, will have 7,376 foot-pounds of torque. The thing is, that’s wheel torque, which is actually different from the standard automotive measurement. In truth, this speed demon actually has closer to 758 foot-pounds of torque when calculated properly. Still, that’s an abundantly impressive figure that’s still better than most of the other vehicles on this list. After all, the other figures can’t really be fudged — like a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds.
Top Speed: 250mph
Horsepower: 1,000

What's The Difference: Hypercar vs. Supercar

Especially in today’s world, it can be difficult to tell classes of vehicle apart — especially when you get into the higher end of the performance spectrum. If you’re looking to expand upon your knowledge, however, we’ve put together a handy guide that tells the difference between supercars and hypercars.
