It was almost exactly two months ago to this very day that we shared the news of the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder “crash car” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off heading to auction. And while that sale has come and gone — ultimately raking in $337,000 — yet another, arguably even more famous Ferris-used “Fauxarri” film car is now scheduled to take its turn going under the hammer, with a 1985 Modena Spyder California that was used to ferry Ferris, Sloane, and Cam around Chicago in the 1986 John Hughes flick.
Considering that genuine Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder examples represent some of the most valuable cars ever sold — with recent specimens fetching between $15M and $20M — it simply wasn’t in the teen comedy’s $5M budget to utilize an actual Prancing Horse car. As such, Hughes and the production called on Neil Glassmoyer of El Cajon, California’s Modena Design & Development to whip up four Ferrari 250 GT Cali Spyder replicas — one of which is the example that’s now headed to auction.
Built atop a bespoke multi-tube space frame chassis equipped with independent front suspension and a live rear axle, this soon-to-be-sold replica Ferrari wore fiberglass bodywork reinforced via a steel cowl brace, steel door inners, and a steel boot lid. Under its diamond-quilted-lined hood, the replica Ferrari packs a 165-hp 5.0-liter Ford pushrod V8 engine with electronic fuel injection and a Ferrari engine cover. Because Matthew Broderick didn’t know how to drive a stick, the replicar was outfitted with an automatic four-speed transmission — despite the interior sporting what looks to be a gated manual setup. Boasting just two owners over the last three and a half decades, the “Fauxarri” also came loaded with disc brakes, and a highly-authentic replica interior.
Expected to fetch between $350,000 and $450,000, this 1985 Modena Spyder California Ferris Bueller’s Day Off film-used movie car is slated to cross the auction block at Bonhams’ upcoming Amelia Island sale at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club in Florida starting March 2nd. The sale of the car also comes with an included cast-signed shooting script, multiple pieces of film art, a Hot Wheels version of the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Ferrari, a signed picture of Matthew Broderick, a custom keychain, and a prop replica version of the “NRVOUS” Illinois license plate worn by the car in the film.
