Though they were originally built as affordable high-performance road-legal vehicles aimed at the everyman consumer, many of the higher-specced vintage Ford Mustang examples have massively spiked in value over the last decade or two, with clean specimens routinely fetching close to, if not over six-figures when trading hands. These figures can be even greater when it comes to rare factory-built variants, such as this pristine 1970 Ford Mustang Sportsroof 428 Super Cobra Jet that’s just hit the online auction block.

Delivered new to Wayne Akers Ford in Lake Worth, Florida, this Mustang Sportsroof model was extensively restored in the 1990s — which included being resprayed in its factory Lime Metallic livery — and has been kept in pristine condition ever since. Riding on a set of body color-matched 14” steel wheels wrapped in period-correct Goodyear Polyglas white-letter tires, the Mustang sports chrome bumpers, color-keyed racing mirrors, sport slats, and a matte black rear deckled spoiler. Trimmed in White Rhino vinyl, the interior of the car features lap belt-equipped front bucket seats, an AM radio, a Hurst shifter, a two-spoke steering wheel, a 120-mph speedo, and a five-digit odometer showing around 47,000 miles — though the vehicle’s total mileage is unknown.

Fed via a shaker hood scoop and a four-barrel carb setup, the car’s engine consists of a 428ci (7.0 liter) Super Cobra Jet V8 that features a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok rear end with 3.91:1 gearing. Also of note is the fact that this 1970 specimen has also been fitted with Ford’s then-new Drag Pack, which included elements such as a remote-mounted oil cooler and higher ratio rear axle gear. Other highlights include a front sway bar, dual exhaust outlets exiting below the rear bumper, a trunk-mounted full-sized spare, and unassisted drum brakes at all four corners.

Being sold via the Avant-Garde Collection in Portland, Oregon, this 1970 Ford Mustang Sportsroof 428 Super Cobra Jet is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer where, as of the time of writing, bidding has reached $81,964 with four days remaining on the sale.
