Whether you’re road-tripping inside an Airstream or simply spotting one on the highway, few images of the open road evoke nostalgia like these aluminum camping trailers. Despite the downturn in the camper industry following a Pandemic-era peak, Airstream is still going strong and is expanding its range more now than ever, including the off-road focused Interstate 19X based on the Airstream Interstate 19 class-B touring coach.
This week, Airstream debuts a new limited-edition Outland variant of the Interstate 19X tailored more towards glampers.
Airstream’s Modest Yet Impactful History
Airstream has been operating since the late 1920s when Wally Byam made wooden camping trailers from his backyard in Los Angeles, and also sold how-to kits for customers looking to make their own. Less than a decade in, Byam pivoted to the iconic aluminum models that his brand would become synonymous with. And today, there are many companies that strive for that same emotional resonance — although few ever come close.
Airstream Interstate 19X Outland Edition Basics
Based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, the Interstate 19X Outland Edition is still just as nimble as the non-Outland version. Riding on 18-inch wheels, the van is powered by a 2.0L turbo diesel engine from Mercedes as well
But what sets this Outland Edition apart is its slew of party tricks. For starters, it features a unique three-in-one bed system that gives you multiple configuration options. You can sleep inside lofted, or move it forward for better gear storage, or slide the bed outside entirely so you can sleep under the stars. You can also take it out completely if your eally want to. Moreover, the bed frame has a chair swing mount for additional seating options. This is the first time Airstream has ever put this bed system in one of its models and we hope it’s not the last.
All of the Lights
The Outland Edition also boasts a quartet of REV Black V2 speakers with a 400W subwoofer, channeled through a Sony DSX-GS80 receiver. For both daytime and nighttime enjoyment, you can set up the 270-degree L-shaped awning, equipped with LED lights. More lights are put underneath the van, which you can customize how you’d like. And, oh yeah, there are lights equipped to actually help you with driving, such as the new exterior lighting package to aid with off-road driving — which the brand says is “unlike anything Airstream has ever done.”
Along with the equipped toilet and shower inside, you’ll get a removable Dometic fridge and an exterior table mount for cooking or meal prep included in the package. For more off-grid capability, you can upgrade your camper to the E1 Package for a larger 12,000-watt battery pack, a 3,200-watt inverter, and a fuel source optimization system that allows you to tap into the vehicle’s fuel rather than the onboard propane.
