This Apocalypse-Ready Overland Trailer Has Bear-Spray Cannons and Blast Shields

We’ve covered our fair share of overland trailers over the years, but Mammoth Overland’s latest creation is insane, even for us. Say hello to the XLE, or “Xtinction-Level Escape” if you’re feeling formal. It’s an outlandish $124,000 trailer that treats bears, bandits, and societal collapse as overlapping concerns that are worth engineering around.

It’s the spiritual successor to the brand’s 2023 ELE (Extinction Level Event), which made waves by offering optional Level 3 ballistic protection as a $25K add-on. The XLE takes that proof of concept, drops it onto the brand’s full-height Tall Boy chassis, and somehow finds room for even more apocalypse-themed absurdity.

Built Like a Plane, Armored Like a Vault

Mammoth Overland is a subsidiary of Vashon Aircraft, which makes the Ranger R7 light sport plane, so they do have real aerospace credentials. The XLE rides on a TL (Tall Boy) platform with all-aluminum aircraft-grade construction, standing 9 feet tall with 22 inches of ground clearance.

The bulletproof glass runs throughout the cabin, the rear door is a multi-point-locking vault, and the windows have remote-deployable blast shields because of course they do. Inside, the cabin is pressurized with dual medical-grade HEPA air filtration, sealing occupants away from smoke, dust, fallout, or whatever else might be drifting around outside.

A Suite of Non-Lethal Party Tricks

This is the section where the spec sheet starts reading more like a Tom Clancy novel than an outdoor camper. The XLE’s “situational awareness suite” includes 360-degree night-vision CCTV to ensure you’ve always got eyes on the situation, a 112-decibel sonic defense system (read: a very loud air horn), and a quad bear-deterrent setup that sprays a 25-foot radius of bear mace from four separate points around the trailer.

There’s also a remote-deploy 37-millimeter flare launcher, reloadable from inside the cabin, plus six remote-controlled strobe units for full flashbang-style disorientation. Mammoth swears the flares fire upward and burn out before hitting the ground, so no, you’re not starting a wildfire while fending off your imaginary intruders.

The Survivalist’s Punch List

Beyond the defense systems, the XLE is loaded with more prepper gear than you can wrap your head around. There’s a dual long-rifle storage in addition to a dedicated gun safe, a concealed under-mattress safe, a HAM radio, an onboard weather station, and yes, a Geiger counter for monitoring radiological conditions. You know, just in case.

Power-wise, it’s running a 1,200 Ah lithium battery bank fed by a 400-watt solar array, with dual propane and a portable generator as backup. Starlink keeps it connected anywhere, and an onboard water filtration system pulls double duty as drinking source and morale boost. Everything and the kitchen sink, except the kitchen actually swings out from a side panel along with a two-burner stove and an overhead spice cabinet.

For the Family That Bugs Out Together

What separates the XLE from its ELE predecessor is real living space. The Tall Boy platform gives it a stand-up interior with a king-size bed, an interior shower, and enough room to actually inhabit for extended stretches.

A rooftop observation deck with dual standing platforms and a roof escape hatch rounds things out, in case you need to glass the horizon or exit through the ceiling. Hopefully neither, but the option is there.
