Toyota’s First Full-Size Land Cruiser Hybrid Is Still Built to Conquer Sand, Rock, and Terrain

Toyota has been dabbling in hybrid powertrains longer than most, but they’ve been oddly selective about which vehicles get the electrified treatment. While the Prius pioneered mass-market hybrids and even the mid-size LC250 has (controversially) embraced dual powertrains, the full-size Land Cruiser 300 has remained stubbornly traditional. That changes now with the 2026 Land Cruiser Hybrid 300, a machine that finally bridges Toyota’s hybrid expertise with their most capable off-road platform.

Engineering the Beast

For the task, Toyota does more than simply tossing a battery pack onto their existing platform but gives us the most powerful Land Cruiser configuration ever, delivering a substantial 457hp and 583 lb.ft of torque through a parallel hybrid setup. Fans of the Lexus LX 700h will notice those power figures, which makes sense since they share the same TNGA-F platform architecture.

Under the hood sits Toyota’s proven twin-turbo 3.5L V6 paired with a single electric motor sandwiched between the engine and the standard 10-speed automatic transmission. This is the same powertrain configuration found in the Tundra i-FORCE MAX and Sequoia, though the Land Cruiser delivers slightly more output than its pickup truck siblings.

Seamlessly integrated into the current 300 platform, the electric motor provides instant torque fill at low RPMs, perfect for navigating technical terrain or pulling heavier loads. Toyota claims the system delivers “smooth and even throttle response even in the toughest of terrain,” based on extensive testing in Middle Eastern deserts and mountain environments.

Likewise, Toyota has engineered the hybrid components for off-road duty as well. The battery area is waterproofed, recognizing that real Land Cruiser owners don’t just drive to the grocery store. There’s also a built-in 1,500-watt AC inverter in the cargo area, which is great for powering tools, compressors, or camp gear when you’re venturing off the grid.

Still Just as Capable

Fans of the Land Cruiser will appreciate how the hybrid maintains the imposing presence of the original, but while adding subtle differentiation. The comfort-oriented VXR trim features an updated front bumper with revised intake design — a feature that we would’ve assumed the performance-focused GR Sport variant would’ve gotten as well. Both trims wear “457 TT” side badges and “HEV” tailgate emblems to mark their electrified status.

Inside, Toyota has updated the digital instrument cluster with hybrid-specific graphics, paired with a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The interior retains the Land Cruiser’s utilitarian luxury approach, with everything you need and nothing you don’t.

One minor trade-off is that the hybrid comes with a 68-liter fuel tank (17.9 gallons) versus the standard gasoline model’s 80-liter capacity. Still, with Toyota claiming 25.6mpg (versus 21.9mpg for the non-hybrid V6), the reduced tank size shouldn’t significantly impact range.

The Twist

Unfortunately, this hybrid beast won’t be getting a Stateside launch anytime soon. Toyota discontinued the 300-series Land Cruiser from North America in favor of the smaller 250-series (aka the “Prado”) and pushed luxury buyers toward the Lexus LX. If you want this powertrain in America, your only option is the LX 700h, which starts north of $115,000 and can eclipse $150,000 in Ultra Luxury trim — significantly more than the ~$106,000 starting price of the 300. However, the 250 Prado is available in its hybrid form in the U.S.
