Volkswagen has long invested in the research and development of all-electric vehicles, with the German automaker’s first-ever EV dating back to 1972 with the Elektro Transporter van. In more recent years, VW has successfully brought several production EV models to market such as the ID.4 and e-Golf. For the brand’s latest all-electric offering, however, Volkswagen has revealed what will almost certainly be its best-selling EV to date with the accessibly-priced Volkswagen ID. 2all01 — a freshly-revealed concept car that will serve as the basis for an eventual 2025 production model.

Based on Volkswagen’s MEB (modular electric drive) Entry platform, the production ID.2 car marks one of ten new models VW plans on releasing by 2026. Despite an incredibly affordable starting price, the ID.2 boasts a solid spec sheet, that includes a battery with a 280-mile range and a 166-kW (222-hp) drive motor that sends power to the car’s front wheels. Even more impressive is the fact that the ID.2 also comes with a host of cutting-edge proprietary technology and systems such as VW’s Travel Assist, IQ.LIGHT, and an Electric Vehicle Route Planner.

The ID.2 features an exterior design that’s based on the Golf, though also sees a few tweaks such as a partially smoothed-over grille and a novel LED strip headlight arrangement that runs horizontally across the entire nose of the car. Sporting a modern visual theme, the interior of the car also comes loaded with a digital driver’s display paired with an even larger central touchscreen. And, while we anticipate this new model will see decent sales, whether or not its manages to beat Tesla’s forthcoming Model 2 to market very well may make the difference between the ID.2 merely being a success or being one of the best selling EVs of the decade.

The production model that’s based on the Volkswagen ID. 2all01 concept is scheduled to hit dealerships in select markets starting in 2025. Pricing for the EV will start at €25,000 (~ $26,545) — making it one of the most affordable EVs currently on the market.
