In recent years, factory-built off-roaders have become all the rage, prompting the majority of today’s major marques to develop off-road-specific trim levels of their respective pickups and SUVs. And after previously introducing go-anywhere PRO-4X versions of its Frontier and Titan trucks, Nissan has now bestowed the same PRO-4X treatment onto its completely redesigned flagship Armada SUV.

The Basics

Taking aim at Toyota’s Sequoia TRD Pro and Chevy’s Tahoe Z71, the Armada PRO-4X is a 2025 model year vehicle that’s based on the Japanese brand’s comprehensively redesigned full-sized sport utility vehicle — which has also been released under the banner of the Nissan Patrol in certain overseas markets. Marking the first-ever PRO-4X-spec Armada in the model’s more-than-20-year history, the Armada PRO-4X features an impressive host of hardware and an equally noteworthy forced induction powertrain that gives it more than enough horsepower and torque to conquer even the harshest of terrains.

Engine & Power

At the heart of the Armada PRO-4X is an all-new twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine known as the VR35DDTT that comes bolted to a new nine-speed auto transmission — replacing the prior model year’s seven-speed unit. The Armada’s new twin-turbo engine platform cranks out a very respectable 425hp and 516ft-lbs of torque. These figures not only give the latest Armada best-in-class power for any (non-hybrid) full-size SUV, but they also result in a towing capacity of up to 8,500lbs.

Off-Road Hardware

The PRO-4X grade Armada is a true turnkey off-roader. As such, the thing has been outfitted with a generous slew of go-anywhere bits straight off the showroom floor. This includes all-terrain tires, optional 22” wheels, underbody skid plates, an electronically-locking differential, and adaptive electronic air suspension. Compared to the other Armada trim levels, the PRO-4X-spec also gains improved approach, break-over, and departure angles — of 33°, 25.5°, and 24.5°, respectively.

Offering seating for eight, the thing also boasts a cool 9.6” of ground clearance — giving it 2.1” more ride height than the standard Armada trims. Using on body-on-frame setup, the entire SUV is constructed around an all-new frame that offers 25% greater torsional rigidity and 57% better lateral stiffness, further bolstering its go-anywhere capabilities.

Onboard Tech

Nissan’s Armada PRO-4X isn’t just extremely capable off-road, but it’s also incredibly high-tech, sporting an impressive slew of gadgets, technology, and assist systems. The off-road and overland-ready model benefits from a generous array of available camera systems including a 3D Around View Monitor, Front Wide View, and Invisible Hood View. The vehicle is also being offered with Nissan’s ProPILOT 2.1 hands-free driving assist system, plus comes fitted with the brand’s Safety Shield 360 system as standard. The SUV also features a whopping eight different selectable drive modes in the form of Standard, Eco, Sport, Tow, Snow, Sand, Rock, and Mud/Rut.

Additional Trim Levels

The Armada PRO-4X is one of five trim levels the full-size SUV is being offered in for the 2025 model year — with the other four being the SV, SL, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve. All five trim levels are offered with the option of either rear-wheel drive or Intelligent 4WD — aside from the PRO-4X, which is equipped with 4WD as standard.
