When it comes to the G-Wagen’s design, Mercedes stands by the age-old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This time around, however, Mercedes is introducing some big changes in the 2025 Mercedes G-Wagen lineup – which very well may be one of, if not the final petrol-powered iteration of this iconic vehicle.

The biggest update with this new lineup is the Formula 1-derived mild-hybrid assist (a 48-volt onboard electrical system) for both the base model and the range-topping G63. For the 2025 G550, this mild-hybrid assist works in tandem with the new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. Replacing the prior model year’s V8, the hybrid turbo six-cylinder mill for 2025 puts down 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The same hybridized treatment has also been bestowed upon the 2025 G63’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, which is now good for 577hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. AMG Active Ride Control is also available for the G63, giving you access to an adaptive suspension system that uses hydraulic anti-roll bars and dampers to minimize body roll and generally bolster go-anywhere capabilities. It’s part of the AMG Offroad Package Pro, which also includes the AMG Tracking Pro and AMG Active Balance Control driving modes, giving you even more options to customize traction and control while off-roading (along with a roof rack and some extra goodies). The “transparent bonnet” that Mercedes is touting is a 360-degree overhead camera that provides some vision of what’s underneath you.

The new hybrid powertrain will not only presumably allow for better mileage and range, but the addition of the electric motor also makes the G-Wagen more conducive to off-roading thanks to the immense (and instantaneous) low-end power and torque afforded via the mild-hybrid system.

There’s no word on pricing quite yet for the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G550 and 2025 Mercedes AMG G63, but the 2024 G550 starts at $143,000, and the 2024 G63 starts at $183,000 which should give you an idea of what to expect.
