Since its inception in 1914, Maserati’s vehicles have largely been characterized by their premium nature, exotic looks, and potent engines. And though it’s now aiming to shift to a fully-electric lineup by 2028, the Trident brand is making a major effort to retain the characteristics that have defined its cars for over a century, with sleek-looking, meticulously-crafted automobiles that still boast adrenaline-inducing performance capabilities thanks to some wildly state-of-the-art all-electric powertrains. For proof of this, look no further than the Modena marque’s latest release; the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore.
Made in Italy’s legendary “Motor Valley,” the new GranCabrio Folgore — Italian for “Lightning” — is a new range-topping, high-performance, fully-electric version of the GranCabrio grand-touring drop top that the company debuted in late February. As such, the Folgore-spec sees the regular model’s 542-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 jettisoned in favor of a trio of 187-kW electric motors that collectively put down 750hp and an even more impressive 1,000ft-lbs of torque. While Maserati has yet to reveal top speed or 0-60mph figures, we’re confident that this 750-hp tri-motor configuration will make this new model one of the fastest electric GT models on the market. What’s more, the vehicle’s 560-kW tri-motor setup has also been paired with a 92.5kWh battery that affords 280 miles of range per charge.
Tipping the scales at around 175lbs more than the hard-top variant, Maserati’s new GranCabrio Folgore also features a host of aesthetic changes. Not only is the vehicle offered in several Folgore-exclusive livery options, but it also sees the gas models’ grille swapped out for a redesigned item that achieves a sleeker appearance (thanks to the fact the grille no longer needs to funnel air in to cool the gas engine). The Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is also rumored to supposedly feature a sound generator for its fully-electric powertrain. Alongside debuting the GranCabrio Folgore, Maserati has also introduced several additional Lightning-spec models including a Grecale Folgore SUV and an MC20 Folgore supercar, as well as an all-electric 10.5-meter carbon fiber-hulled luxury boat christened the “Tridente.”
The 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is slated for a release next year. Though pricing and a full spec sheet have yet to be revealed, we anticipate the GranCabrio Folgore to start from a little north of the $100,000 mark.
