In September of 2022, Ford revealed its highly-anticipated seven-generation Mustang. Approximately a year later in August of 2023, the Blue Oval announced that it would be producing a limited run of an ultra-high-performance, race-derived, road-legal version of the car known as the Mustang GTD. Upon its debut, the company announced its intentions of pulling off a sub-seven-minute lap time at the fabled Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In a bid to achieve this ambitious goal, the Michigan marque has now unveiled a new, even higher-performance GTD Carbon Series variant along with a new Performance Package that Ford hopes will bring it one step closer to cracking the seven-minute mark at the Nürburgring.

The “Regular” Mustang GTD
In order to fully wrap your head around the Mustang GTD Carbon Series and its new optional Performance Package, one has to first be familiar with the “regular” (for a lack of a better word) GTD-spec Mustang. Taking its name from IMSA’s Grand Touring Daytona racing class, the Mustang GTD was born out of a collaboration between Ford and Multimatic. Representing the most powerful and high-performance Mustang ever, the GTD model is kicked along by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that cranks out around 800hp. Sporting a carbon widebody setup with an advanced aero kit, the car also features Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, an available titanium exhaust, and an advanced, first-of-its-kind suspension that adjusts the setup’s spring rate and ride height settings in order to adapt to real-time conditions on both the road and track.
The GTD Carbon Series
As if the so-called “regular” GTD’s performance capabilities and hardware wasn’t already impressive enough, Ford has now rolled out an even more capable model variant known as the GTD Carbon Series. Slated for an official public unveiling at this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Carbon Series highlights the car’s body’s extensive use of carbon fiber by leaving the composite’s weave on full display with an exposed carbon hood, roof, and rear “Tech Deck.” In addition to sporting a set of wheels finished in Magnetite, the Mustang GTD Carbon Series can also be optioned with available painted stripes.

The Performance Package
For the Blue Oval’s most discerning (and deep-pocketed) customers, both the regular and Carbon Series versions of the Mustang GTD can now be optioned with an all-new Performance Package that takes the road-legal widebody track weapon’s capabilities and cranks them up several notches. Comprising the package is a redesigned front fascia with a new larger front splitter and dive planes, underbody flaps, and a rear wing with a new drag reduction system. Also included in this exclusive upgrade kit is a Lightweight Package that sees some of the car’s sound-deadening material deleted, and adds even more lightness by lacing the vehicle up with a lightweight set of 20” five-arm Y-spoke wheels forged in top-shelf magnesium.
The Updated Interior
Alongside the exterior of the vehicle now being offered in a total of six available GTD-exclusive paint options— including the new Chroma Flame livery seen here — the Mustang GTD Carbon Series’ cabin has also been bestowed with a few noteworthy, track and performance-focused updates. In addition to Recaro seats, a carbon fiber trim package, and a transparent in-cabin window that puts the car’s advanced suspension setup on display, the inside of this spare-no-expense Mustang variant has been treated to an all-new flat-bottom steering wheel that boasts a thick, well-padded rim, a leather wrap, and a high-end combination of Dinamica and carbon fiber inserts.

The new race-derived steering wheel has also been outfitted with a set of 3D-printed titanium paddle shifters that sport a unique hexagonal pattern to bolster grip while also adding a few obvious style points. What’s more, the car is also being offered with available titanium trim elements encompassing the cabin’s rotary gear selector. The cockpit’s 13.2” touchscreen display and reconfigurable 12.4” digital gauge cluster have also been supplemented via a pair of new buttons on the hero panel located in front of the interior’s rotary gear selector. This allows its driver to access the Mustang GTD’s Track Apps page, plus can be used to activate a front-axle lift function to raise the car up in situations on public roads, parking lots, or driveways where the GTD-spec Mustang’s ultra-low clearance could be problematic.
Straight From The Horse’s Mouth
“Many sports cars excel at one thing. But for a car to set a quick lap at the Nürburgring, it needs to be great at everything,” explains Mustang GTD Chief Engineer Greg Goodall. “Cornering, grip, braking, acceleration, there’s not a single area where it can’t shine. From the lightweight carbon fiber body on every GTD to the active aerodynamics of the Performance package, we’ve learned from motorsport how to make the Mustang GTD excel everywhere, all in the quest for a sub-seven-minute lap of the Nürburgring.”
Why It Matters
With the existing Mustang GTD representing the most exclusive , high-performance variant of the pony car that Ford has ever produced, it’s quite frankly pretty shocking to see the Blue Oval opt to deliver numerous available upgrades on the already-extremely-capable track weapon — as it’s hard to imagine the existing GTD left driver’s wanting more speed or power. With that said, Ford’s aim of cracking the seven-minute mark at the Nürburgring is certainly looking like a very realistic possibility now that it’s got the bevy of benefit afforded by the Carbon Series variant and both model’s available Performance Package.
