Originally debuting in 1992 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an immensely popular SUV that’s grown increasingly capable and luxurious with each new iteration. And for the 2022 model year, the American marque has treated the sport utility vehicle to a comprehensive redesign inside and out, resulting in the all-new fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Like prior model years, the 2022 Grand Cherokee will be offered in a variety of trims — the Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve specs —all of which are available in a hybrid 4xe-spec, marking the first-ever electrified Grand Cherokee. The Trailhawk and Overland versions also sport Jeep’s Trail Rated badge, and as such come equipped with a host of off-road-focused upgrades including an air suspension system, Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires, an electronic limited-slip rear diff, skid plates, tow hooks, and Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II setup, its most advanced 4WD system to date. At the heart of the regular version is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 that features variable valve timing and electronic throttle control and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission while the 4xe-spec packs a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine that’s paired with a set of electric motors and a 400V, 17kWh battery pack fortified beneath a full skid plate— a setup that’s good 375hp and 470ft-lbs of torque and offers an all-electric range of 25 miles. On top of five different terrain modes — Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand — the 4×4 versions of the vehicle boast a new front-axle disconnect feature. In addition to the exterior undergoing a thorough refresh, the cabin of the SUV has also received an equally involved redesign that includes a full suite of customizable LED lighting, 16-way adjustable seats, and 10.1″ digital display supplemented via a 10.25″ front passenger interactive display and a new high-definition rear-seat entertainment system. A host of high-tech amenities have also been added to the mix such as a night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection, intersection collision assist, a drowsy driver detection system, parallel and perpendicular park assist, traffic sign recognition, and an all-new 360-degree surround-view camera system.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup is scheduled to hit US dealerships in late 2021 before the hybrid 4xe variants’ release in Q1 of next year. Pricing has yet to be revealed, though we anticipate a similar MSRP to the outgoing SUV, which started at around $40,000 for the base model and went up to almost $65,000 for the most top-shelf variant.
