Late last year, RM Sotheby’s announced that it would be selling off a one-of-a-kind 2022 Bugatti Chiron Profilée hypercar at the auction house’s Paris Sale starting February 1st. Representing the very last brand-new quad-turbo W-16-powered car ever sold by Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., the Chiron Profilée was expected to fetch a seven-figure sum when it took its turn going under the hammer, however, even experts didn’t anticipate the monumental amount that the one-of-one Chiron would go for.
Despite being evaluated at between $4.6M and $6M, the Chiron Profilée would blow away expectations. After an intense battle of back-and-forth bidding, the 236-mph hypercar would ultimately close at €9,792,500 (~ $10,685,900) — more than 27-times the cost of the average home in America. This eight-figure sum not only makes the Bugatti one of the most expensive cars ever to cross the auction block, but also the single most expensive new car ever sold in the entire history of automobiles. Originally planned as a limited production model before the plug was pulled on the variant after only a single unit was completed, Bugatti’s Chiron Profilée distinguishes itself from other Chiron models in several ways.
Alongside improved thermodynamic airflow management and upgraded steering and suspension systems, the Profilée also came cloaked in model-exclusive bodywork that produces ever greater amounts of downforce than the standard Chiron. The hypercar’s two-stage quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine has also seen its rev ceiling raised by 200rpm all the way up to 6,900, and the vehicle’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox has also been given shorter ratios — the latter of which results in a 2.3-second 0-60mph time, making the Profilée the quickest-accelerating Chiron of all time.
Setter of a new world record, this 2022 Chiron Profilée is the latest Bugatti to join the ranks of the most expensive cars ever sold, though we’re extremely confident that it won’t be the last.
