Produced by Boeing, the CH-47 Chinook is a tandem-rotor helicopter that first entered service in 1962. Among the many military forces that utilize the Chinook is the UK’s Royal Air Force which counts the Chinook as one of the branch’s longest-serving aircraft — a fact that British shop TECNIQ is now celebrating via the creation of a one-off Land Rover Defender that’s inspired by the heavy-lift helicopter.
Dubbed the Q40, this one-off project is based on a 2013 Defender 110 XS and takes design cues from the twin-rotor chopper, with a combination of matte and gloss dark green paint complemented via a bevy of carbon fiber components including the build’s custom grille, flared fenders, and hood and fender vents. Even more impressive is the Q40’s interior which has been completely reworked. The cabin of the Defender now features a ‘twin zoned’ 2+2 seating configuration with carbon fiber seats, a quilted roof, a custom steering wheel, and bespoke switches and instrumentation. The trunk also features a cargo net-style divider in the back, hanging just above a removable carbon fiber emergency kit — both clear nods to the Chinook.
The reworking of the Land Rover wasn’t merely aesthetic, and the truck now boasts numerous performance upgrades. Under the hood, the Q40 now packs a Mustang-derived turbocharged Ford EcoBoost 2.3-liter engine that’s been mated to an upgraded six-speed automatic transmission and tuned to put down 307hp and 318.6ft-lbs of torque. The TECNIQ team has also treated the luxury SUV to a suite of high-end running gear including an all-new suspension system with programmable dampers, upgraded anti-roll bars and bushing, and lowered coil springs, plus new front six-pot calipers chomping down on 345mm discs. Additional highlights include a custom onboard camera system, custom carbon fiber side steps, and custom TECNIQ wheels shod in BGF all-terrain tires.
TECNIQ’s Q40 2013 Land Rover Defender 110 XS was constructed as a charity project, with the truck having been built to be sold off to benefit the Royal Air Forces Association. Over the weekend, this one-of-one Defender crossed the auction block at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars & Automobilia sale where it brought in £138,000 (~ $157,790).
