Loch Lomond’s 46-Year-Old Scotch Whisky Is Among Its Rarest Ever

Named for one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland, Loch Lomond has grown its reputation for incredible whisky since it was first founded over 200 years ago. Once the only distillery in the country to make both malt and grain whiskies, the independent distillery is now the only one in Scotland to make its whisky using straight-neck stills, which give the whisky makers more control over the characteristics of the spirit being produced.

Last year, Loch Lomond launched the first of three bottles in its Remarkable Stills series — a collection of limited releases that showcase the distillery’s fine craftsmanship — with a 45-year-old single malt. Now, the company has unveiled its second release, a 46-year-old single malt that’s one of the best and rarest expressions ever brought out by the distillery.

First distilled in 1974, this whisky was then aged in first-fill and refilled American oak casks for 44 years. It was later finished for two years in a combination of first-fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximinéz sherry casks. The amalgamation of its journey results in an incredibly dynamic and unique flavor profile that includes brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves, with apple and pear notes from the straight-neck stills and dried fruit from the sherry cask influence. This all gives way to a gooseberry, lime, and toffee finish.

Each purchase of the 46-year-old single malt will see the bottle hand-delivered to the buyer’s door by a member of the Loch Lomond team. Limited to only 200 bottles around the world, the 46-year whisky is going for £4,500 (~$5,546) on Loch Lomond’s website, but the company has also made 25mL samples available for those who don’t want to pay for the full-sized bottles. These smaller bottles are going for £200 (~$247) and are extremely limited, with only 8 remaining at time of writing. Each of these tasting packs comes with a one-on-one tasting session with Global Ambassador Gay Mills.

Purchase: $247+
