Jack Daniel’s Announces Its First-Ever American Single Malt Whiskey

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about American Scotch-style single malt whiskey with the TTB’s new proposal of an official designation of the style. While any distillery in the U.S. can technically make malted whiskey, U.S. brands largely craft traditional bourbon and corn whiskey since those are what the American consumer prefers when it comes to domestic spirits. An official designation — or Standards of Identity — wouldn’t just define the category but would bring awareness and credence to the category’s staying power. And with an increasingly crowded market, many distilleries are excited about the possibilities of expanding their spirits line-ups.

One such distillery is none other than Jack Daniel’s, which just announced it would be debuting its very-first single malt whiskey, formally called Twice Barreled 2022 Special Release: American Single Malt Whiskey, its fifth annual in the Special Release collection.

Crafted from a mashbill without an ounce of corn, the brand-new expression is made from 100% malted barley and should have an earthier profile than American corn-based whiskey. After being charcoal mellowed and aging for four years in American white oak barrels, the new expression was given a secondary maturation for two more years in former oloroso sherry casks before it was bottled between 106.1 and 107.8 proof.

Originally planned for a summer 2023 release when it was rumored a few weeks back, this new limited-edition Single Malt from Jack Daniel’s is set to debut this month for around $70.
