There are experimental watches that look like experiments, and then there are experimental watches that seem quirky at first glance, but when you think more about them, you start to realize, “That actually makes a lot of sense.”

Hamilton’s wild Jazzmaster Face 2 Face watch debuted in its first iteration back in 2013 under the idea that the wearer could have two different aesthetic options with the same timepiece. It was a limited-edition chronograph with a dial on either side of a swiveling oval case. Both sides of the case looked bonkers, with the small dial aligned next to the exposed movement of the dial from the reverse side. The brand followed this up with the Face 2 Face II in 2016, which had a much different look. This time there was only one dial with its exposed movement on the other side.

Now, Hamilton has debuted the Jazzmaster Face 2 Face III, ditching the ovular case shape for a more traditional 44mm round one. Where its predecessors looked a bit more jarring, the new version is decidedly more accessible — relatively, that is. However, there are still subtle touches of strangeness, such as the exposed date disc and the three different-sized and -colored subdials that each encroach on one another’s planes. The flip side features the exposed caliber H-41 automatic movement, surrounded by tachymeter and pulsometer scales, with a single blue chronograph seconds hand that rotates counter-clockwise.
