Alongside its normal production knives, the Spyderco brand has a handful of other special knife-making programs such as its experimental Mule Team blades. Another is the Colorado company’s Sprint Run models, which are single-batch limited runs of special edition knives that typically employ unique and/or premium materials and finishes.
And the latest batch of Sprint Run knives sees the brand treat more-than-half-a-dozen of its most popular knives with a unique handle color and blacked-out blades made from a rare micro-melt steel from Carpenter Technology.
Included Knives
Interestingly, this particular Sprint Run release features a total of seven knives — all of which have been bestowed with the same special handle and blade steel combination. All made in Japan, the models included in this drop consist of special versions of the Manbug, the Dragonfly 2 Lightweight, the Delica 4 Lightweight, the Endura 4 Lightweight, the Stretch 2 XL Lightweight, and the Police 4 Lightweight.
Burgundied Scales
All seven modes in this drop are of the Lightweight variety, meaning that they use Spyderco’s lightweight FRN scales with the brand’s patented Bi-Directional texturing. Complemented via blacked-out hardware and a black pocket clip, these Lightweight scales come finished in a shade of dark burgundy that’s unique to this Sprint Run batch.
Micro-Melt Blade Steel
The most noteworthy aspect of this Sprint Run — and the part that gives it its name — is unquestionably the knives’ particularly blade steel. Each model comes outfitted with their standard blade made from rare (and very premium) Micro-Melt CTS PD#1 steel from Carpenter Technology — a Philadelphia-based outfit most famous for its CTS metals.
Fortified via a non-reflective titanium carbonitride coating, this blade steel is cold-worked, air-hardened, and uses a Micro-Melt powder metal process that results in an ultra-fine, homogeneous grain structure. Essentially Carpenter’s version of Crucible’s Cru-Wear steel, CTS PD#1 shares most of its properties with Cru_Wear. All seven knives also features blade’s with full flat grinds.
