Opinel Broke From 135 Years of Tradition to Build Three Environment-Specific Outdoor Folders

Opinel has spent more than 135 years proving a knife doesn’t need much. A blade, a beechwood handle, a little ring that twists to lock it, and you’re done. The formula has barely moved since 1890, which is exactly what makes the new Outdoor Collection so interesting.

The French brand just dropped three performance folders built for specific environments, and not one of them looks like the knife rattling around your junk drawer.

The Alpine Disappears in a Pack

At a scant 1.45 ounces, the Néo7 Alpine was developed with instructors from Chamonix’s National School of Skiing and Mountaineering. It runs a 3.25-inch serrated blade tuned for chewing through rope and webbing.

You also get a cork grip zone, a mini scraper, and an integrated 1/4-inch bit holder that turns the thing into a trailside screwdriver. It’s the only knife in the trio using Opinel’s newer Opiflex lock instead of the classic Virobloc ring.

The Ocean’s Party Trick

The N°09 Ocean is probably the most interesting amongst the trio. Its 3.5-inch partially serrated blade wears an anti-corrosion PVD coating for a life spent in salt spray. But, the headliner is the built-in marlinespike, a tapered fid for prying open swollen, water-logged knots.

There’s a shackle key tucked in there too. You don’t see hardware like that on a $60 folder very often, and at 2.8 ounces, it’s definitely the beefiest of the bunch by a comfortable margin.

And the Horizon Holds Down the Middle

That leaves the N°08 Horizon. It’s the $40 generalist and the closest thing here to a knife your grandfather might recognize. Smooth 3.25-inch blade, the traditional Virobloc double-safety ring, a fiberglass-reinforced handle, and its own 110-decibel whistle.
