The Hyzer Modular Titanium Hatchet Took Three Years of R&D to Perfect

Buying a hatchet for your next camping trip can be daunting. Different from knives, these small axes have a unique set of complexities and something as small as length or balance can either benefit or critically affect your intended use in the wild.

This is why Exceed Designs came out with its Hyzer Mini Titanium Hatchet, using a modular construction that allows expert swingers to tailor the axe how they see fit or newcomers to adapt the tool to their own experience with it.

From Razor Blades to Raw Timber

If you’ve been following Exceed Designs since their early days out of Washington state, you know this brand built its reputation on the TiRant RAZOR, an ultra-compact titanium utility knife that turned heads in the EDC community for treating a simple blade holder like it was a precision folder. The Hyzer is a different animal entirely, but it shares the same DNA: 6AL-4V Grade 5 titanium, obsessive tolerances, and a modular system that lets you configure the tool to your own standard. Over three years of R&D went into this thing, and according to the brand, that timeline involved multiple CNC shops, scrapped samples, and hard lessons in what it actually costs to machine a handle this complex out of real titanium at any kind of reasonable price.

The Build

The handle is fully skeletonized and CNC’d from solid 6AL-4V GR5 titanium , the same alloy grade found in premium hammers and aerospace components, valued for its ability to dampen vibration better than standard steel. The head, meanwhile, is tempered D2 steel at 60-61 HRC, which is a workhorse steel with excellent edge retention, and attaching it to a lightweight titanium handle shifts the balance forward in a way that should help carry momentum through a swing. The head connects via eight custom T10 Torx screws (in customizable colors), and while that might make some traditionalists pause, Exceed has engineered a nested design that holds the head with more redundancy than the fastener count alone implies.

Three axe head thicknesses are available — light (6.77 oz), medium (7.44 oz), and heavy (8.88 oz) — but pairing the heavier head with the Mini handle might be best for anyone planning to use this in the actual backcountry. Early reports say the skeletonized handle responds well to the optional paracord wrap, which adds grip and takes some of the sting out of vibration transfer. You can also opt between a USA-made Horween leather sheath or a molded sheath with a Molle belt clip and snap strap.

The Mini vs. Full Question

The hatchet comes in two handle lengths: the full-size at 9.75″ and the Mini at 8.15″. With the Mini, you’re trading some chopping leverage for a more packable, EDC-friendly profile. For lighter tasks around camp like kindling splitting, this one should do just fine. If you’re planning to bring down anything with real diameter, the full-size handle gives you the swing arc to generate force without working against yourself. It’s worth noting that Exceed has thought through this modularity from day one: all heads are compatible across both handle lengths, so your investment in additional heads travels with you if you upgrade later.
