The way that our sun interacts with Earth’s atmosphere is pretty miraculous. Simply by changing the angle that light is viewed through the planet’s dense gaseous outer layer, the entire color spectrum seems to change — at least to the naked eye — through a process called Rayleigh scattering. You see, when the sun is high in the sky, its light filters and scatters through our atmosphere — and it appears as a bluish hue because blue light scatters more than other colors through our thin atmospheric layer thanks to its short, small wavelengths. However, when the sun approaches the horizon, the light has to travel through much more of the atmosphere (roughly a 30% increase), causing wider and deeper wavelengths — like red and orange — to be the most visible. It’s this phenomenon that makes sunsets such a dazzling spectacle and its what we’ve found inspiration in for this week’s everyday carry pocket dump.
Fox Knives Baby Core Mini Knife
Designed by top-shelf knife designer Jesper Voxnaes, the Fox Knives Baby Core Mini knife is a handsome, unique, and smart little everyday carry folder marked by a high-end Bohler N690Co steel blade and a striking and geometric fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle. It also comes with a tip-up wire pocket clip, a reliable liner locking mechanism, and a caged ball-bearing pivot for buttery smooth deployment every time.
Il Busetto Bi-Fold Card Case
Beautifully manufactured in Italy from top-grain vegetable-tanned leather, this sleek bifold is as much a utilitarian tool as it is a handsome showpiece. And while its stunning exterior is enough to get on our radar, it’s helped by a whopping six individual card sleeves — which offer up enough room for 12+ cards with a bit of working-in. The lack of a cash pocket might have mattered some years ago, but its exclusion now seems appropriate for our increasingly digital world.
Vuarnet ICE 1709 Sunglasses
Since 1957, Vuarnet has been crafting some of the best-performing outdoor-focused sunglasses around. And they’re especially good at making mountaineering shades, like the ICE 1709 Sunglasses you see before you today. Besides their good looks, they also offer a measure of versatility, as the side shades are actually removable. That way, you can get wind protection when you need it, but they’ll also transform into stylish everyday sunglasses when harsh conditions aren’t in the forecast.
Breitling Superocean Automatic 36 Watch
Breitling’s Superocean is one of the best dive watches around, bar none. And while any colorway is going to serve you just as well, this striking one adds a nice pop of vibrant color to any everyday carry loadout. Aside from its styling, it also boasts a sturdy stainless steel case that’s good for dives as deep as 200m, it features a reliable automatic movement, and it has a handy rotating dive timer bezel. Just remember: you don’t have to be taking a scuba trip to wear this handsome timekeeper, as it functions just as well as an everyday style piece.
