Everyday Carry: Envy

The color green holds a unique space in our culture, especially nowadays. In fact, its usage depends largely upon the context. While red is most often associated with heat and anger, blue with calmness and tranquility, yellow with happiness and energy, purple with regalness and extravagance, etc, green can mean a great number of things. The most obvious, perhaps, is its connection to growth and renewal — due to the fact that green is the primary color of foliage. This primary association can also be said to connect to the “go green” environmentalist movement of today. Green is also associated with forward motion, as its the color used in streetlights to signify the instruction to proceed. Furthermore, it’s even been known to signify both arousal and illness. One of its most famous alternative associations (green with envy), however, can be traced back to none other than William Shakespeare in his play Othello: “Beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” Regardless of your own preferred association, there’s no denying the beauty found in the green gear found in this week’s everyday carry pocket dump.
