Custom knifemaking runs deep at Buck. The company launched in 1961 by father-son duo Al and Chuck Buck, but it was really the lineage of Al’s father Hoyt who started the family on the journey of custom knives, forging models from worn-out files as far back as 1902.

Today, Buck keeps the tradition alive, especially in its Cell 14 workstation at its Idaho Custom Knife Shop facility, where their skilled artisans handcraft personalized and limited-edition blades. For the 2026 We Are Knifemakers release, based on the brand’s behind-the-scenes video series, Buck’s very own Andrew Avoux gets the chance to put his own spin on arguably the most iconic folder of all time.

The 110 Gets a Radical Redesign

If you’re familiar with the Model 110 Folding Hunter — brass bolsters, ebony wood scales, that unmistakable clip-point silhouette — then this version might throw you for a loop. Avoux has stripped away nearly every traditional element in favor of something a bit sleeker. Gone are the bolsters, the wood handles, even the visible hardware. Instead, the entire knife is executed in mirror-polished aluminum that flows uninterrupted from tip to tail. It’s a departure that borders on sacrilege, but it works in its own minimalist way.

Mirror, Mirror

The blade itself maintains Buck’s trusted 420HC steel with their proprietary BOS heat treatment, though Avoux opted for a drop point rather than the classic clip. At 3.75″, it’s actually slightly longer than the standard Slim’s 3.3-inch blade, and the whole package comes in at just 3.3oz. There’s no pocket clip, no thumb stud, no nail nick — just clean lines and that signature back lock mechanism keeping things traditional where it counts. Avoux hand-shaped each handle, and the result feels more like a gentleman’s EDC piece than a hunting knife, even if it shares the same core.

The mirror finish extends across both the blade and handle, creating a cohesive aesthetic that’s decidedly more of a showpiece. It’s an interesting choice for a knife originally designed to skin big game, but the 110 has evolved far beyond its hunting roots over the past 60 years. In fact, the inaugural We Are Knifemakers model also employed the 110 as its canvas back in 2024.
