In preparation for the 2019 SEMA Show, Volkswagen built out a trio of off-road-ready concepts all based on the firm’s then-new Atlas SUV. Fast forward to today, four years after its debut, and one of these three builds — the Basecamp Concept — is now being used as the direct inspiration for a new trim level of VW’s SUV dubbed the Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition.

Aiming to offer a more rugged, go-anywhere appearance, the Atlas Peak Edition features a host of silver and blacked-out elements including new wheel arches, side sills, mirror caps, roof rails, and underbody cladding. Offered in Peak Edition-exclusive Avocado Green and Pure Grey paint options, the exterior of the vehicle also sports black and orange Peak Edition badges, 18” black alloy wheels shod in all-terrain rubber, a silver diffuser, and chrome exhaust bezels. The cabin of the new off-road-flavored Atlas has also been treated to numerous model-exclusive elements such as Titan Black leatherette upholstery paired with light grey and orange accent stitching, Peak Edition interior badging, and black metallic dash and door inserts.

Unlike most off-road packages, the Atlas Peak Edition is largely just a cosmetic upgrade and does very little to actually bolster the SUV’s off-roading abilities — aside from possibly providing some minor body protection. As such, this new trim level is devoid of the Atlas Basecamp Concept’s Muddybuddy floor liners, Thule roof rack and awning, Bumperdillo protection plate, hood deflector, and H&R Springs suspension lift kit. It is, however, worth noting that since the debut of the 2019 Basecamp Concept, the custom fifteen52 off-road rims that the concept rode on have now entered production and are available for sale as the fifteen52 Traverse MX Wheels.

Thus far the company has been pretty tight-lipped on most aspects of the 2024 Atlas Peak Edition, giving no info on pricing or availability, above and beyond saying that it will join the 2024 Atlas lineup and that more details will be revealed as we get closer to the special edition model’s launch later this summer. With that said, we anticipate the Peak Edition to be priced at around the $40,000 to $45,000 mark based on existing trim-level MSRPs.
