Representing the second-ever sports car developed entirely in-house by the Affalterbach outfit, the Mercedes-AMG GT is an ultra-high-performance roadster and coupe model that was first released in 2015. After spending the better part of a decade in production, Mercedes will soon be phasing out the GT, however, before it does, the company is adding yet another model variant to the lineup with the Mercedes-AMG GT2 customer race car.
Based on the limited edition GT Black model, the GT2 is a track-only race car that’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-plane-crank-equipped V8 engine that’s mated to a six-speed sequential transmission and is good for 707hp. The most powerful homologated customer racing car ever produced by Mercedes-AMG, the GT2-spec GT racer seeks to bridge the gap between the company’s GT3 and GT4 models, with the GT2 being aimed at what MB calls “Gentlemen Drivers” — i.e. aspiring non-professionals with a decent amount of skill behind the wheel.
The GT2 also benefits from a downforce-generating aero kit that’s comprised of a carbon hood with massive air intakes, louvered front axle carbon wings, flared fenders, a new front splitter, new side skirts, a new rear diffuser, and a newly-designed single-level multi-adjustable wing. Riding on forged 18“ AMG light-alloy wheels that are mated to the car via a new center-locking mounting system, the AMG GT2 also gets special racing ABS, multi-adjustable traction control, adjustable motorsport shock absorbers, and adjustable anti-roll bars. Fortified via a carbon safety cell, the GT2’s carbon-clad interior also boasts a yoke-style multifunction steering wheel, a race-spec digital display unit, safety nets, a roll cage, a carbon center console, a carbon safety fuel tank, a fire extinguishing system, an extrication hatch, and a full carbon fiber six-point harness-equipped race seat.
Sold via a direct sales model through the company’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT2 will go on sale early next year. The GT2’s pricing and delivery period will be revealed at a later date.
