Though it was only in production for a few short years, the DMC DeLorean is nonetheless recognized as a bonafide 1980s automotive icon. And though the mid-engined sports car has been out of production for nearly four decades, the reborn brand is now looking to deliver a new DMC for the modern era — a model that we’re now getting our first look at.
While no information or specs have been announced — including the vehicle’s official name — we do know the old DMC’s mid-mounted gas engine will be swapped out in favor of a fully-electric powertrain. The image the company has revealed shows a rear three-quarter shot of the car’s tail that reveals its strip LED lighting and what appears to be a modern, widebody interpretation of the original Giugiaro-designed model — including modernized rear window louvers.
While we don’t anticipate the new EV version to boast brushed steel bodywork, we do expect (or at least hope) the DMC EV will retain its predecessor’s gull-wing doors and wedge-inspired silhouette. And, while the original DMC’s performance was considered somewhat lackluster upon its debut — at least for a vehicle of its price — the upcoming electrified version will almost certainly sport some cutting-edge performance capabilities.
The forthcoming EV from the DeLorean Motor Company is slated to make its official public debut at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week on August 18 at the event’s Awards Ramp — by which time we expect the company to reveal additional information on specs, availability, and pricing.
