In 2004, Ducati announced that it was developing a limited-edition road-going replica of its V4-powered MotoGP race bike. Limited to only 1,500 units worldwide and costing over $70,000, the 197-hp machine was known as the Desmosedici RR (or “Race Replica”) and was a legitimate premier class race bike with a headlight, indicators, and a plate holder. Being a highly-exclusive, limited-edition collectors bike, very seldom are Desmo RR specimens modified or customized — a fact that makes Roland Sands Design’s latest Desmosedicci-based build so incredibly noteworthy.
Dubbed the “RSD Desmo Fighter,” this MotoGP replica — which is actually Roland Sands’ second Desmosedicci-based build — has been transformed into a more road-focused streetfighter-style build. Unlike most streetfighter projects, however — which are often the result of a superbike being crashed and having its fairings ditched — the Desmo Fighter was built for an aging client that was no longer physically comfortable with the bike’s hunched-over riding position. As such, its clip-ons were jettisoned in favor of ProTaper bars set atop a set of RSD pullback risers and a one-off top triple, plus the donor’s stock rear-sets have been lowered.
With a more comfortable and upright rider triangle, the Ducati was then torn down before being built back up with a custom belly-pan, one-off frame and radiator covers, and a bespoke headlight shroud and assembly with a handworked windscreen and a 7” circular LED. Made using 3D scanning and printing, the final bodywork has been rendered in carbon fiber and also includes functional front air intakes. Saddleman also provided a bespoke seat for the naked superbike while Chris Wood of Airtrix fame was tasked with laying down the Desmo Fighter’s Ducati Corsa-inspired livery.
Unlike most high-end customs, the Desmo Fighter won’t just be a garage queen or showpiece, as its more relaxed riding position should allow its owner to add to the 4,158 miles the donor currently has on the clock. Alongside the one-off bike itself, Roland Sands Design has also revealed an all-new limited-edition Bell x RSD Bullitt Carbon Mulholland Helmet that’s available for purchase on the RSD website.
