Once you get past the hurdle of actually being able to afford a watch from Urwerk, you have to ask yourself if the brand’s unorthodox timepieces would even be something you’d put on your wrist in the first place. Whether you’re an avid watch enthusiast or a casual observer, you’re likely familiar with the Swiss brand’s sci-fi-forward models. But what’s impressed us most since its debut in the late ‘90s isn’t just Urwerk’s knack for making interesting-looking watches but the horological innovation at play inside of them. Leaning into the galactic aesthetic of its UR-120, the brand has now made a stealthy all-black version.
Dubbed the Spock watch for how reminiscent it is of the Star Trek character and the devices used throughout the franchise, the UR-120 has been an industry favorite since debuting last year. Just like the previous version, which is gray in color, the Space Black edition features a sandblasted titanium and stainless steel case. But this time, the material has been treated with black DLC and coated with silicon. As for the black dial, it’s accented with neon yellow. Equipped with a calfskin leather strap, the watch’s dimensions are the same as well, with a 44mm length and 47mm width.
Regardless of the ostensible Trekkie connection, the UR-120 is actually quite a marvelous timepiece. It’s a wandering hours satellite display, originally inspired by the language from the brand’s UR-110. However, the UR-120 does things a bit differently. Here, each hour block separates in half, with each half rotating on its access and then coming back together to form a new number. The united hour block will then move along the minutes scale on the side of the dial to give the time. Pretty cool, eh?
Of course, like its other pieces, this UR-120 Space Black won’t come cheap. In fact, it’s even a bit more than the non-black version. Priced at CHF110,000 ($124,195), the timepiece is available via Urwerk’s website and its retailers.
