Watch enthusiasts have a weird double standard when it comes to quartz. We’ll happily beat on a G-Shock all weekend, but we’ll instantly take issue with battery-powered timepieces as soon as something with actual design pedigree shows up.
Unimatic, the Milan studio that’s spent a decade perfecting the stripped-down dive watch, clearly wants no part of that debate. Its newest release is quartz on purpose, and it’s built like issued equipment. Say hello to the Modello Uno UT1-PD.
The ProDiver Comes Down to Earth
Last August, Unimatic launched the ProDiver collection. It was the brand’s most serious dive watches to date, with automatic movements and pricing that started around $870 and climbed past $1,700 for the titanium flagship.
The UT1-PD takes that same professional dive kit and folds it into the brand’s quartz-powered Toolwatch family. You still get 300m of water resistance and a proper elapsed-time dive bezel, and it’s now the cheapest route into ProDiver territory by a wide margin.
The case itself is peak Unimatic. Sandblasted 316L steel, 40mm across (41.5mm counting the bezel), 49mm lug-to-lug, and 13.6mm thick with the sapphire in place.
A Battery With a Bodyguard
Inside beats Seiko’s VH31A, a quartz caliber whose seconds hand ticks four times per second instead of once. That half-sweep motion means most people will clock this as a mechanical watch, while you quietly enjoy accuracy of ±15 seconds per month and roughly two years between battery swaps.
The movement sits inside Unimatic’s 360° protection system, an in-house thermoplastic polyurethane shell that cradles the caliber and caps the dial with a protective ring. Think of it as a crash helmet for the movement.
That armor is why the UT1-PD carries MIL-STD-810H certification, the US Department of Defense’s environmental torture-test standard. And the whole watch still weighs just 81 grams before the strap.
Dressed for the Dive
The matte black dial swaps the standard Toolwatch’s printed numerals for proper diver geometry. Dots, bars, and a fat triangle at 12, all filled with Super-LumiNova C1 alongside the flat black ladder-style hands.
The reverse lollipop seconds hand gets an international orange tip, matching the bezel’s triangle and the thin orange trim ringing the dial. Up top sits a 3mm flat sapphire with inner anti-reflective coating.
Flip it over and you’ll find the ProDiver’s signature dive mask engraving, stamped with each watch’s number out of 250. It ships on a black TPU strap with signed steel hardware, ready for actual water.
