The Tudor Ranger Returns to Its Roots With a New 36mm Case and Its First Non-Black Dial

The modern history of the Tudor Ranger only dates back about a decade, although its lineage goes back much further. Prior to the revival a few years ago, the Ranger name was a designation given by the Rolex sister brand to its field spec watches within the Oyster Prince lineup during the ’50s and ’60s, featuring minimalist, legible dials and robust movements. While those early models were sized at 34mm, modern Rangers have modern proportions exclusively in 39mm.

But now, looking back to its roots, the Ranger is now dropping its cases down to a more vintage 36mm while also introducing the first non-black dial variant in this current lineup.

Downsizing for the Better

When Tudor brought back the Ranger in 2022 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, the 39mm case was already a step in the right direction. But there’s something about 36mm that feels right for a tool watch that’s supposed to blend expedition-ready toughness with everyday wearability. It’s not quite the 34mm vintage sizing of early models, but a middle ground that works better on modern wrists without going oversized.

The new 36mm case keeps everything that made the 2022 version solid: fully brushed 316L stainless steel throughout, a domed sapphire crystal, 100m of water resistance, and that utilitarian aesthetic that’s become the Ranger’s calling card. Tudor went with an 11mm case thickness here (versus 12mm on the 39mm), which makes a difference on the wrist. The arrow-shaped hour hand and angular seconds hand remain, but they’ve added a burgundy-tipped second hand for the refresh.

Desert Vibes Meet Arctic Heritage

Up until now, modern Rangers have only been released with black dials, but now there’s a new Dune White option. Tudor’s been connected to the Dakar Rally for a while now, and this colorway feels like a nod to the sand-filled desert of Saudi Arabia. It’s not quite the polar white dial some collectors have been hoping for, but the grained matte texture gives it a distinct look.

Instead of luming the black Arabic numerals and hour markers, Tudor added small lume plots along the minute track. The hands get filled with beige Super-LumiNova for low light conditions.

Mind you, the watchmaker isn’t leaving behind the 39mm at all. Both the black and Dune White dials will be available in either 36mm or 39mm cases, which gives you four combinations to work with.

Movement Matters

Inside, you’re looking at Tudor’s Manufacture Calibre MT5400 automatic for the 36mm (or MT5402 for the 39mm if you go that route). These are COSC-certified chronometers with silicon balance springs, running at -2/+4 seconds per day — tighter than standard COSC specs — and 70 hours of power reserve.

Bracelet Options

The steel bracelet comes fully brushed with Tudor’s T-fit clasp, which gives you five quick adjustment positions across an 8mm range, tool-free. The fabric strap is the other option — a green passthrough with red and beige stripes, woven on 19th-century Jacquard looms by Julien Faure in France. Tudor’s been using these straps across their lineup, and they’ve held up well. It’s a solid choice if you prefer something more casual than the bracelet.
