Arguably no watchmaker in the world is better at tapping into the spirit of their historical pieces like Timex. With an entire Q Timex line built around retro quartz models from the ’70s and ’80s, it’s safe to say we’re just going to keep seeing more throwbacks from the brand — and we’re here for it!
Now, Timex has gone back to the back catalog yet again for a reissue of their first foray into the LCD digital watch sphere back in 1975.

The Original Pioneer
When Timex launched the SSQ (Solid State Quartz) back in 1975, it was seen as a major shift in how we told time. While LED digitals were already on the market, they required you to press a button just to see what time it was — a quirk that feels absurd today. The SSQ’s always-on LCD display was revolutionary for its era, offering constant legibility without draining the battery. It was mass-market innovation at its finest, bringing futuristic tech to everyday wrists during the height of the digital watch boom.
The original featured a streamlined stainless steel case with minimal fuss — no hands, no complications, just pure digital readout. And while the ’75 model used a crown for adjustments, Timex has modernized the interface here without losing the retro aesthetic.

Modern Build, Vintage Soul
The reissue stays faithful to the original’s spirit while upgrading where it counts. You’re looking at a 38mm recycled stainless steel case with a sunburst-brushed top and polished sides — a nice detail that elevates the watch beyond simple throwback territory. The bold navy acrylic lens surrounding the LCD display is pure ’70s cool, prominently displaying the SSQ branding beneath the screen.
Unlike the original’s single crown, this version features two pushers flanking the bezel for easier time adjustment. The matching brushed stainless steel bracelet ties everything together.
The quartz digital movement handles basic timekeeping, date function, and a 60-second counter — keeping things simple and true to form. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters, though Timex warns against pressing those buttons underwater if you want to maintain that rating.
