There’s a decent argument that the loudest crowd in motorsport isn’t at Monaco or Monza. It’s the wall of orange that swallows the Dutch dunes every August, hundreds of thousands of Verstappen faithful turning Zandvoort into the closest thing F1 has to a home stadium.
That party ends this month, and TAG Heuer is marking the occasion with the Formula 1 Solargraph Zandvoort limited editions.
One Last Lap at Zandvoort
When the Dutch Grand Prix returned in 2021 after a 36-year absence, the Orange Army showed up in force and never let up, win or lose. Now the promoters are bowing out on their own terms, closing the book with Zandvoort’s first-ever sprint weekend on August 21 through 23.
TAG Heuer, F1’s official timekeeper, wasn’t about to let that slide quietly. The brand cranks out race-tied editions all the time, but this is the only one on the calendar that will never come around again.
1986 Bones, Orange Army Paint
The Formula 1 was the very first watch sold under the TAG Heuer name back in 1986. It was a cheap, loudly colored quartz piece that yanked the brand out of the quartz crisis and onto a few million wrists.
This 38mm sandblasted steel case channels that original, wrapped in the collection’s signature daisy-shaped bezel rendered in bright orange TH-Polylight.
Rather than going full tonal like April’s pastel series, the dial anchors all that orange with a neutral grey opalin base, red lacquered hands, and eggshell Super-LumiNova that glows green after dark. Shield markers at 6, 9, and 12 keep the family resemblance intact.
Your Desk Lamp Counts as Fuel
The Calibre TH50-00 inside is a Swiss quartz movement powered entirely by light, natural or artificial, and the numbers on it are pretty impressive for daily wear. One minute of direct sun buys a full day of running, while a complete charge keeps it ticking for ten months in a dark drawer.
If it ever does die, you only need ten seconds under a light to wake it back up – and the accumulator is rated for roughly 15 years.
