Back in 2023, TAG Heuer linked up with Bamford Watch Department and Team Ikuzawa for a Carrera that never left Japan, which meant most of us only got to admire it through a screen. Three years later, the trio has regrouped for a sequel, and this time the rest of the world gets a shot. Meet the new Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa.
The Fastest Name in 1970s Japan
If Team Ikuzawa doesn’t ring a bell, here’s the short version. Founder Tetsu Ikuzawa was one of the first Japanese drivers to make it in Europe, running Formula 3 and Formula 2 before landing a Porsche factory endurance seat and a run at Le Mans.
His daughter Mai now runs the team as more of a cultural project than a race outfit, bridging motorsport, design, and fashion. Her father wore Heuer back in the day, so this partnership fits the theme nicely.
Stopwatch Energy, Wrist-Sized
The design brief came from a specific piece of hardware: the handheld Heuer Roadmaster stopwatches the team used in the pits during the ’70s and ’80s. That’s why the 39mm Glassbox case works so well here. No bezel, just a domed sapphire crystal flowing over the dial, exactly how you’d read a timer in one glance.
The white dial gets a Clou de Paris hobnail texture, printed numerals instead of applied indices, and Team Ikuzawa red splashed across the hands, date disc, and that roulette-wheel 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock. There’s even a red lacquered ring around the crown.
Making Room for the Logo
The in-house TH20-10 movement (column wheel, vertical clutch, 80-hour reserve) deliberately omits the running seconds, and leaves the 6 o’clock real estate open for the Team Ikuzawa signature.
That’s a direct nod to the double-signed racing chronographs of the ’60s and ’70s, when Jack Heuer left dial space for sponsors and teams.
The Toolbox Treatment
Each watch ships on a seven-row steel bracelet with two extra straps in the box: a perforated white leather number with red stitching straight out of the driving glove playbook, and a red-and-white striped textile strap echoing the team livery.
And the packaging? A pit garage toolbox, complete with travel pouch and charms.
