TAG Heuer’s Racing Icon Gets More Wrist Presence With 41mm Glassbox Carrera Chronograph

Since dropping its bezel-less Glassbox Carrera design back in 2023, TAG Heuer seems to have breathed some new life into their brand — though not like they needed it. The domed crystal now stretches all around the chronograph dial for a unique aesthetic and improved readability from different angles. However, until today, the Glassbox has only really been offered in a 39mm size (plus the rare 42mm version). That all changes with the unveiling of the 41mm versions.

The Racing Legend

The original Carrera launched in 1963 with Jack Heuer’s obsessive focus on legibility for motorsport timing. Named after the treacherous Carrera Panamericana road race, it embodied speed and precision and has become a paragon of the racing chronograph. Fast forward to 2023, and TAG brought back that curved sapphire crystal aesthetic for their 60th-anniversary Glassbox models, mimicking the domed plexiglass of vintage Heuer chronographs. The approach worked.

Carrera Gets More Wrist Presence

Now the 41mm iteration opens things up for those who found the 39mm a bit compact. At 14.17mm thick with a 47.48mm lug-to-lug measurement, the proportions should be more balanced as well. Three dial options debut with the new size: a refined blue with tone-on-tone subdials, a rich teal green that’s becoming a TAG signature, and a black variant with red chronograph hands and outer ring that channels pure racetrack energy.

One improvement over the 39mm is its subdial spacing. The smaller version felt slightly cramped with its three registers pushing right up against the wave-shaped chapter ring. Here, there’s just enough breathing room — maybe a millimeter on each side — but it changes the whole visual balance. Plus, TAG ditched the quirky 12 o’clock date window for a cleaner, no-date layout.

Movement and Build Quality

Inside ticks the in-house TH20-01 automatic chronograph — essentially a no-date version of the TH20-00. You’re looking at an 80-hour power reserve, column wheel and vertical clutch actuation, and bidirectional winding. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement reveals its Côtes de Genève finishing and shield-shaped skeleton rotor.

The seven-row steel bracelet is TAG’s modern take on the classic beads-of-rice design, with alternating brushed and polished faceted links with a butterfly clasp.
