Swatch & Blancpain Finally Nail the Affordable Dive Watch with Military-Inspired ‘Green Abyss’

Admittedly, we’ve been getting a bit fatigued by the Swatch x Blancpain parade. While a $400 price tag on a luxury diver is certainly a headline-worthy story, the loud ocean-inspired colorways of the Scuba Fifty Fathoms vary between playful summer wear and “acquired taste” territory.

Enter the Green Abyss variant, the latest in the collaborative collection, showing just how well the storied Swiss brands can balance concept with GADA wrist presence.

It’s Easy Being Green

A refreshing change of pace, the Green Abyss starts with an olive drab green case that immediately calls to mind field gear and tactical equipment. But where certain Scuba Fifty Fathoms releases (like the bright yellow variant) don’t make as much sense for a diver, this green colorway actually fits the mold perfectly. The hue gets paired with field tan accents on the dial markers, hands, and NATO strap, creating a stunning package for even the biggest detractors of the high-profile collaboration.

Like past iterations, the moisture indicator at 6 o’clock now feels more appropriate here, redolent of the MIL-SPEC dive watches designed for the U.S. Navy specifications, where a color-changing indicator warned of water ingress.

Beyond the Olive Branch

Despite the new colorway, the execution remains the same, including the return of the 91m of water resistance. Helping bring the price tag down, the 42.3mm case is still made of Bioceramic, a unique blend of two-thirds ceramic and one-third biosourced material derived from castor oil. It creates the signature matte finish that the rest of the collection has, while also being inherently scratch resistant. The unidirectional rotating bezel features a deep black resin insert with Super-LumiNova, and the vintage-tinted lume gives the whole package a decidedly retro feel.

The dial layout mirrors the Antarctic Ocean model from the original 2023 launch, featuring printed indices rather than the applied numerals found on some variants. These indices have a subtle three-dimensional quality that adds visual interest to an otherwise flat dial surface. The prominent Blancpain and Swatch branding at 12 o’clock remains as obtrusive as ever, taking up significant real estate, but it’s become part of the collection’s DNA at this point.

The Regal Sea Goddess Takes Center Stage

Flip the Green Abyss over and you’ll find the caseback’s star attraction (at least according to Swatch): a digital print of the Felimare picta nudibranch, better known as the Regal Sea Goddess. This vibrant sea slug, typically found gracing the Gulf of Mexico’s ocean floor, adds some unexpected color to the otherwise muted palette. It’s visible through the sapphire crystal caseback alongside Swatch’s SISTEM51 movement, which continues to deliver solid performance with its 90-hour power reserve and anti-magnetic properties courtesy of a Nivachron hairspring.

Also returning is the NATO-style strap, now in a matching green, crafted from recycled fishing nets with Bioceramic hardware. However, the two-piece design differs from some of the collection’s single-pass NATO variants, offering better adjustability for different wrist sizes.
