Ask anyone who’s spent real time in the backcountry what’s on their wrist, and odds are decent it’s a battered old Suunto Core. The thing launched in 2007, does exactly three jobs (altitude, weather, direction), and has outlived four generations of smartwatches trying to replace it.
Well, after 19 years, Suunto has finally decided the old dog deserves a proper successor, and it comes in the form of the new Core 2.
Still an ABC Watch, Proudly
The Core 2 keeps the original’s ABC formula intact: altimeter, barometer, and compass, all running off sensors rather than satellites. There’s no GPS, no heart rate monitor, and no app store, which Suunto insists is a feature rather than an oversight.
The barometer is still pulling double duty here. It tracks pressure trends and will even sound a storm alarm when things start dropping fast. The V2’s sensors are are also sharper as well, with automatic pressure filtering to help cut down on false alarms.
Brighter, Tougher, Deeper
The headline upgrade for the watch is the 1.3-inch LED dot-matrix display. It’s now a reported 40% brighter than the original, and topped with Gorilla Glass instead of mineral crystal. The backlight also switches between green for low-light legibility and red for preserving your night vision, which is a thoughtful touch for those predawn starts.
Durability also got the same treatment. Water resistance jumps from 3 ATM to a proper 10 ATM, and the composite case is tested to MIL-STD-810H standards across seven punishing categories, from salt fog to freezing rain.
The 15-Month Flex
Now for the number that puts every AMOLED flagship to shame: up to 15 months of battery life in time mode. And it’s powered by a humble user-replaceable CR3032 coin cell, packing roughly double the juice of the original’s battery.
Suunto did drag the Core into the Bluetooth era for time sync, step counts, and firmware updates. But the connection is entirely optional, so you can go fully dark whenever the trip calls for it.
