Seiko’s New Presage Is a $1,700 Dress Watch with a Hand-Finished Arita Porcelain Dial

We were just talking about Seiko’s 145th anniversary lineup last week with the Prospex divers, but apparently the brand wasn’t done. Two more limited editions have landed, this time from the Presage Classic Series, and they’re carrying the same Seiko Blue torch in a much dressier direction.

The Presage line has quietly become one of the most interesting things Seiko does at this price point. While Prospex divers and Seiko 5 Sports field watches soak up most of the attention (we’re pare to the problem), Presage has been the playground for traditional Japanese craft: Urushi lacquer, Shippo enamel, Arita porcelain.

The HCC007 and HCC004 keep that streak going, both leaning hard into the cobalt hue that’s defined Seiko’s identity since the 1960s.

Porcelain, But Make It Cobalt

The headliner here is definitely the HCC007. Arita porcelain has shown up in Presage watches before, but always in white. This is the first time Seiko has nailed it in a deep cobalt blue, and getting there apparently took the team years of glaze experiments to keep the radial pattern visible underneath all that color.

Each dial is hand-finished in Arita under master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, with execution by Toshiaki Kawaguchi and his crew at a workshop that’s been firing porcelain since 1830. The result is a dial with subtle tonal shifts depending on how the light catches it. No two are identical, and that’s the whole point.

A New Case Shape

To match the new dial treatment, Seiko gave the HCC007 a fresh case design that doesn’t appear anywhere else in the Presage lineup. It measures 39.6mm across and 12.8mm thick, with curved lugs and exaggerated bezel contours that feel less generic than the standard Presage silhouette. Sapphire on top, and sapphire on the exhibition case back showing off the rotor.

Inside is the Caliber 6R51, the same automatic with a 72-hour power reserve that powers the smaller HCC004. It’s not chasing Grand Seiko’s accuracy specs, but for a watch that costs a fraction of what GS asks, it’s a perfectly respectable engine.

The Sleeper Pick

While the porcelain version will get the magazine coverage, let’s not sleep on the HCC004. At 36mm with a 12.5mm profile, it slots right into the size range vintage dress watch fans have been clamoring for, and the finely beaded fluted bezel adds a textural detail you don’t usually get at this price.

The dial is inspired by shironeri, the creamy white tone left behind when raw silk gets refined. It reads as a soft radial sunburst with applied blue indices and curved blue hands that match the color story of the bigger watch. Pair that with 100m of water resistance (versus just 30m on the HCC007), and the HCC004 is arguably the one you’d actually wear every day.
