The Seiko 5 Sports Pink Panther SKX Brings Cartoon Hijinks to a Cult-Favorite Case

Blake Edwards’ 1963 mystery-comedy film The Pink Panther was so popular that it sparked a merchandising frenzy that included an animated TV show, countless toys, and plenty of sequels (and even a spin-off series starring Steve Martin). However, even more of a hit than the movie itself was the titular cartoon panther featured in the opening titles.

This week, Seiko decided to unveil one of the most random collabs we’ve seen all year with a Pink Panther-themed 5 Sports SKX, and it’s already a viral hit.

Think Pink

The Seiko 5 Sports SKX series has essentially become the spiritual heir to the brand’s legendary SKX dive watches from the ’90s and 2000s. When Seiko discontinued those ISO-rated classics, it folded much of that visual DNA into the 5 Sports line, with the same case language, similar bezel profile, and same 4 o’clock crown position. But it dialed back the dive credentials to 100m water resistance and ditched the screw-down crown. What you get is a lifestyle sports watch that nods to its tool-watch roots while staying accessibly affordable.

The Pink Panther edition takes this platform and wraps it in one of the boldest colorways Seiko has put out in recent memory. At 38mm, the case stays compact, but the pink dial will immediately catch your eye with the embossed footprints trailing up the left side. The black bezel insert features pink numerals rendered in a custom Pink Panther font. Even the seconds hand gets the treatment, with pink on the back half and charcoal up front.

Playful Touches

Flip the watch over and you’ll find a pink-tinted exhibition caseback with the Pink Panther logo and those iconic shifty yellow eyes peering through the “paint.” It’s a reference to The Pink Phink, the 1964 Oscar-winning animated short that launched the character’s solo career after he stole the show in the film’s opening credits. That same cartoon sees the Pink Panther tricking his rival into painting a blue house pink, which explains the included nylon NATO strap stamped with “WET PAINT” and darker pink paw prints.

Inside, the in-house 4R36 automatic movement with hacking seconds and hand-winding offers 41 hours of power reserve like you’d expect. You also get a three-link steel bracelet along with that NATO, so there’s some versatility with styling as well.
