For nearly two decades now, Panerai has been incorporating its ceramic-based Ceramica into its watchmaking repertoire. But while the lightweight case material helps mitigate the heftiness of the Italian firm’s larger 43mm and 47mm Luminor models, many wearers still wanted something smaller.
That’s why in recent years, the brand has been giving us the occasional 40mm Luminor. However, that compact size has yet to be paired with a Ceramica case — until now, tapping the recent GMT version of the tool watch and showing us how a few millimeters won’t make a difference when a watch looks this good.

Ceramic Done Right
Starting with ceramic back in 2007 with the Radiomir Black Seal Ceramica, Panerai has refined its approach to working with this high-tech material. The new Luminor GMT Ceramica (PAM01460) is merely the culmination of that expertise, packing sandblasted black ceramic into a 40mm cushion case while maintaining the collection’s design hallmarks, including the distinctive crown guard, now also rendered in ceramic with mixed satin and polished finishes.
The technical challenge here isn’t minor. Creating Panerai’s signature case design with its multiple rounded surfaces and that iconic lever mechanism in ceramic requires manufacturing precision that the Neuchâtel Manufacture keeps closely guarded. The payoff is a watch rated to 300m of water resistance (tested to 25% beyond that, per Panerai’s standards), which addresses a long-standing gripe among Paneristi about earlier 40mm models only managing 100m. The brand even reinforced the lugs through extensive R&D to meet shock-resistance targets, because the most exposed parts of a ceramic case can’t become weak points during daily wear.

BiTempo Heritage with a Modern Movement
Inside the PAM01460 sits Panerai’s P.900/GMT 12H automatic caliber, visible through a smoked sapphire caseback set into a Grade 5 titanium housing. At just 5.20mm thick, this movement delivers a respectable three-day power reserve from a single barrel. The 12-hour GMT complication here is a nod to Panerai’s early 2000s models, offering dual-time tracking without the cluttered minute track that appeared on previous BiTempo releases — a cleaner execution that better matches the aesthetic of simpler Luminor designs.
The black sun-brushed sandwich dial features cutouts for the hour numerals that let white Super-LumiNova X2 shine through, maintaining legibility whether you’re checking the time in daylight or underwater. Small seconds at 9 o’clock, date at 3, and an arrow-tipped GMT hand complete the layout. There’s also the “BiTempo” script — Italian for dual time — subtly reminding you of the brand’s Florentine roots even though Swiss precision now drives the movement.

Strap Flexibility
Panerai includes both a black calfskin strap with white stitching and a black rubber option, each equipped with the PAM Click Release System on both strap and buckle. Tool-free swapping between the leather and rubber takes seconds, and the DLC-finished titanium trapezoidal buckle completes the package.
